October 2023 Events

This year's car show and community resource fair was held on Saturday, October 28th from 11AM - 3PM. The San Pablo Historical Society was invited to the third annual 'Lowriders at the Library' sponsored by Contra Costa County's branch of the San Pablo Library! 🏎️📚

We were there to witness all the fun as everyone had dressed up in their favorite costume, parents and children as well!

The Merchant's tables were set up giving out valuable information on their services to the community, including providing a bowl of sweet treat for the kiddies. We provided a small pamphlet that the children would need to visit each Merchant table's display and get a sticker. After getting all the stickers, they would turn it into the Library and get a special sticker prize.

The main attraction were all the spooktacularly decorated custom lowrider cars that lined Chattleton Lane, the street located behind Walgreen's in San Pablo. Each lowrider car that was dislayed also had a frighteningly large bowl of sweet treats for the kiddies. This is their special way for the children to "Trunk or Treat" safely for all their Halloween goodies. It was a fun, community-focused event celebrating lowrider cars and culture. There was a large crowd at this year's event who came to check out the cars, learn about our local resources, and participate in a costume contest!

Below are some of those moments captured in the following photos by our Historian, Roxy of the children and adults alike visiting our table for 'Trick or Treat' and all the custom cars eerily decorated for the event on that Boo-tifully sunny afternoon.

And black cats are seen 🐈‍⬛

'tis near Hallowe'en! 🎃👻

First Saturdays

The Alvarado Adobe and Blume House museums will now open to the general public on the first Saturday of each month from 11am-3pm.  Don't miss your chance to tour these historic places filled with San Pablo's history.

The Alvarado Adobe is located at the NW corner of San Pablo Avenue and Church Lane and the Blume House is located at 13873 San Pablo Avenue, next to Las Montañas Supermarket.

You are invited to visit the Museums on Saturday to find out more about these historic buildings and see the many vintage artifacts, photos and other memorabilia in our Museums. The town has come a long way since its days as a rest stop.

Here is your opportunity to see some early history of San Pablo during the days of Governor Alvarado and the people who lived here during that era. Come take an interesting and educational journey to a time when San Pablo was grazing land for the vast ranchos. Another exhibit on San Pablo history includes photos of the Blume house in its original space, surrounded by farmland. The exhibit also has pictures of San Pablo village, its streets lined with saloons. Below are some examples of what you can see and explore in the Alvarado Adobe and Blume House Museums.

Come visit the Alvarado Adobe Museum. This is a view of the Lobby with many interesting vintage items on display, and there's more to explore while you're here!

There is also a vintage Spanish-era trunk with many artifacts which represent the Castro/Alvarado period of the 1800s.

In the meantime, here is a puzzle we hope you'll enjoy solving.

The San Pablo Historical Society with the aid of a City of San Pablo Community Foundation Grant produced a documentary on the life of Juan Bautista Valentín Alvarado y Vallejo, Governor of Alta California (1836-1842).

The film premiered in 2020 on Sunday, January 12th in the Wildcat Room at the new San Pablo Library.  It was a packed house in the Community Room of the San Pablo Library.

For those who didn't attend or were unable to make this event, you missed something memorable. This event was accompanied with performances by the wonderful musical and dance group, Los Arribeños de San Francisco.

This film, by David Anaya, is the first bio-documentary of San Pablo’s most famous citizen and early California’s Mexican period Governors. Governor Alvarado and his family became residents of San Pablo after his retirement from government service. A replica of his Adobe is now a historic house museum.

The San Pablo Historical and Museum Society is now making this video available to the public, and you can view it here online, or download and save for later viewing. We hope this documentary will inspire you to visit Governor Alvarado's Adobe when our museums are again open. We welcome your comments on the film. A complete list of credits can be found at the end of this interesting and informative film. Enjoy!

Juan B. Alvarado (1809-1882) born and raised in Monterey, Alta California under the Spanish crown, led a federalist revolution to rise to political prominence during the Mexican period.  Alvarado married into the well established Castro family (of San Pablo/Contra Costa) and granted multiple land grants to settlers during his political tenure before retiring in San Pablo as an American citizen.

This free premier documentary film screening event of San Pablo's most famous citizen, Juan B. Alvarado. Governor of Alta California, (1836-1842) by  D. A. Anaya was a great success.

Museum tours and Alta California Period Music by Los Arribeños de San Francisco and food from Teto's Catering followed the Film Screening at the Alvarado Adobe. The Program made possible with the financial support of the San Pablo Community Foundation Grant.

On Saturday, April 18, 2020, a special encore virtual film screening of this original documentary film on the life of Gov. Juan B. Alvarado was available online via Zoom through the courtesy of the Richmond Museum of History & Culture.
