Farmer's Market

A small neighborhood market at 1160-13th Street, Farmer's Market, has been in business since the early 1940s. According to real estate records the structure was built in 1942. Records show that Joseph Scalise applied for a business license in 1945, making this small neighborhood grocery in business for at least 80 years!

Joseph "Joe" Ottavio Scalise [1905-1965] was the owner, and Salvatore Joseph Lucido [1913-1975] ran the grocery department. Both were very active in local community affairs.

Joe Scalise, an experienced market operator and long-time resident of San Pablo had been connected with several large markets in Oakland for a number of years. He also had other markets on 23rd street in Richmond (a relative, Tony Scalise owned Scalise Music Center in Richmond).

In the 1950s, Salvatore applied for an "off-sale" beer and wine license for the store, which was approved and renewed in subsequent years. By June 1955, Salvatore Lucido published a notice in the Richmond Independent that he was selling his interest in the market. See attached: "Having sold the grocery department of Farmers Market, 1160 - 13th St., San Pablo, I will not be responsible for debts or obligations incurred in my name after June 24, 1955. Signed: Salvatore J Lucido."

The market has changed ownership throughout the years and is categorized under Independent Convenience Stores as a Mexican & Latin American Grocery Store and Meat Market. It last sold in 1998 for $195k. The butcher/meat department is known as La Altena Foods. A December 2021 City of San Pablo Business License Status Report shows the owner as Jose Gonzalez DBA La Altena Foods and Esamex at 1160 Rumrill Blvd., San Pablo with License Number: BL3867-01.
