Happy New Year LMEC Families,
Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful Winter Break. We look forward to seeing students when they return to school on Monday, January 3rd.
As many of you have likely heard, San Diego County has seen a significant increase in people testing positive for COVID-19 due to the omicron variant. LMEC's leadership team and the district are monitoring this situation closely. At this time there is no plan to make any significant changes to our students' learning program. We will continue to follow the mitigation strategies recommended by the district and SD County Health Department. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school. Email is usually the fasted way to get a response. The emails of all staff members are available on the LMEC website.
Sincerely,
Melanie Kray
LMEC has been selected as a host site for a January 10th district community forum regarding the new superintendent search. The first forum will take place in the morning at LMEC and then a second forum will take place in the afternoon at Patrick Henry. At these forums community members will have an opportunity to meet the two superintendent applicant finalists and provide input on your thoughts about the position and the future of the district. This is a great opportunity for our Logan Heights community to participate in this process. We strongly encourage you to attend if you are able. CLICK HERE for details.
If your child tests positive for COVID-19 please complete THIS FORM to aid in the contact tracing process and contact our school's attendance team to let them know about the positive test result. The easiest way to report the positive test is to email our middle school attendance clerk, Ms. Margarita Lopez at mlopez@sandi.net. You may also call the school at 619-344-6500 and press 3 to leave a message for Ms. Lopez. It is also recommended that you email your child's teachers so they can provide work while your child is absent.
Once you have reported the positive result no further action is needed on your part. You should receive a call or email within the next 24 hours from a member of the LMEC team to set up an independent study contract so your child does not fall behind while they have to isolate.
How families can help:
If your child is exhibiting COVID symptoms (running nose, cough, headache, etc.) please keep them home from school and report the absence. Do not have them return to school until the symptoms have abated or your child receives a negative PCR test result.
Reiterate to your child the importance of wearing their mask properly both inside and outside the classroom while they are on campus.
Pack an extra mask in your child's back pack in case the first one breaks or gets dirty.
Encourage your child to wash their hands frequently
We wanted to make sure families are aware of how to report non-COVID related student absences. The easiest way to report an absence is to email our attendance clerk, Ms. Margarita Lopez at mlopez@sandi.net. You may also call the school at 619-344-6500 and press 3 to leave a message for Ms. Lopez. Once the absence has been reported no further action is needed on your part. Within 24 hours, when you check PowerSchool, you should see the attendance code has been changed from an A to an E which indicates the absence has been reported and excused. We also strongly recommend either you or your student reach out to the teachers to find out about any missed work. Email is normally the fastest way to communicate with teachers.
When the new semester begins on January 24th, students will also start a new DREAM Lab session. That means next week during CREW (January 10th & 11th) students will be reviewing the DREAM course catalog and selecting their top three DREAM Lab choices for second semester. Students may select three new options or request to continue in the same DREAM lab they have already done.
A friendly reminder that the end of Semester 1 is fast approaching. The grades students receive for this final report card are their official grades and will go on their official transcript. Students should be using these next 3 weeks to ensure they have the highest grades possible on their final report card for the semester. Many teachers are offering tutoring during lunch and after school. You can view your child's grades in PowerSchool. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's academic progress please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers and/or counselor.
In order to provide additional academic support to students that need it, LMEC will be offering Saturday Academy classes 8:30 AM -12:30 PM (lunch will be provided) every Saturday for the remainder of the school year. This is a great way to help students get caught up on missing work. For more details please contact Mr. Armando Leon, Instructional Coordinator of Youth Advocacy at aleon2@sandi.net.
