Dear LMEC Families,
First, I wanted parents to know what a tremendous job our teaching staff has been doing to mitigate potential disruptions to your child's learning caused by the COVID surge. Unlike most other schools around the district, LMEC has been able to avoid implementing learning labs (grouping large numbers of students to work independently in the mpr or cafeteria space supervised by a substitute). This is due to the tremendous efforts of our teaching staff and their willingness to step in and cover classes for colleagues when needed. I wanted families to know what an incredible job they have been doing and all the extra work they have been putting in to keep learning disruptions to a minimum for your children. We are truly blessed to have such a hard working staff.
Also, this Wednesday, January 26, LMEC will be hosting an informational meeting for all our current 8th grade families to provide information about the new high school program starting in the Fall of 2022. All current 8th graders have the option of attending the new LMEC HS Program next year. We hope you and your 8th graders will join us for this informational zoom meeting.

The grading window for semester 1 ended on Friday, January 21st. Due to teacher absences related to COVID across SDUSD, the District has decided to extending the window for teachers to submit grades in PowerSchool. What does this mean for students and families? It means that instead of receiving a copy of your child's grades at the end of this week, your child's semester 1 final grades will be mailed out the Week of February 3rd. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact your child's teacher(s) individually.
What to do if your child tests positive:
Do not send your child to school
Report the absence to the school.
The easiest way to report the positive test is to email our middle school attendance clerk, Ms. Margarita Lopez at mlopez@sandi.net. You may also call the school at 619-344-6500 and press 3 to leave a message for Ms. Lopez.
Please complete THIS FORM from the district's Nursing and Wellness Office
The form aids the school in determining how long your child will have to stay home from school. It also aids in the contact tracing process.
Once the form is completed. Someone from Nursing and Wellness Department will contact you with specific information on next steps to have your child return to school.
We also strongly recommend reaching out to your child's teachers to let them know your son or daughter so they can get access to any missing work.
Are you interested in having your child tested for COVID weekly?
LMEC provides weekly COVID testing every Friday morning for students and staff that opt-in

In order to provide additional academic support to students that need it, LMEC will be offering Saturday Academy classes 8:30 AM -12:30 PM (lunch will be provided) every Saturday for the remainder of the school year. This is a great way to help students get caught up on missing work, especially as the first semester is coming to a close.
For more details please contact Mr. Armando Leon, Instructional Coordinator of Youth Advocacy at aleon2@sandi.net. Forty-five students attended our first Saturday Academy let's see if we can get that number over 100 for this coming Saturday!
And in case you missed it, the SDUSD Board of Education unanimously approved the new attendance boundary for the LMEC campus and the new high school program. This will be the first time in more than 30 years that a new, comprehensive neighborhood high school will be opening in San Diego Unified. This historic event was featured on multiple local newscasts. Our students will no longer need to leave the neighborhood to get a first class high school education.
We wanted to make sure families are aware of how to report non-COVID related student absences. The easiest way to report an absence is to email our attendance clerk, Ms. Margarita Lopez at mlopez@sandi.net. You may also call the school at 619-344-6500 and press 3 to leave a message for Ms. Lopez. Once the absence has been reported no further action is needed on your part. Within 24 hours, when you check PowerSchool, you should see the attendance code has been changed from an A to an E which indicates the absence has been reported and excused. We also strongly recommend either you or your student reach out to the teachers to find out about any missed work. Email is normally the fastest way to communicate with teachers.
