Dear LMEC Families,
This week because of the Veteran's Day Holiday, students will be on a special schedule. There is NO SCHOOL on Thursday, Nov. 11th.
Also, as many of you may have seen on the news or read in your email last week - Friday, Nov 12th will also not be a typical school day. SDUSD is encouraging students & families to use Friday as a mental health day and is allowing students to stay home from school. If a student is absent from school on Friday their absence will automatically be excused. Please CLICK HERE to read the email Interim Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson sent to SDUSD Families about Friday, Nov. 12th.
LMEC will be open for students on Friday, Nov. 12th but we wanted to make sure families understood it will not look like a typical school day as we will be emphasizing SEL/mental health activities and we wanted to make sure families were aware they have the option of keeping their children home on Friday.
Sincerely,
Melanie Kray
Thank you parents who completed the parent interest survey. We will be hosting our first PTA meeting on November 30th at 4:30 PM on zoom. Please take a moment to review the flyer below which contains the zoom link for the meeting as well as additional details about PTA.
Ms. Abel's DREAM Lab is being conducted in partnership with the SD Humane Society. Last week, the Humane Society brought in two guinea pigs that students in the class will foster for the remainder of the school year. During Ms. Abel's DREAM Lab students are learning about how to care for animals and these DREAM students will also be helping to host a community "Pup Up" event on Dec. 4th in Memorial Park. Please see below for more details about the Pup Up Event.
Last week Ms. Villegas' Spanish classes learned about Dia de Los Muertos by creating an ofrenda in Building D and Mr. Paredes arranged for our 5-8th grade students to see a special presentation about Dia de los Muertos from professional musicians connected with the San Diego Symphony. We are so fortunate to have the chance to work with these great community partners and a big thank you to our teachers for all their hard work!
We wanted to make sure all secondary families are aware that 6-8th grade LMEC students will be taking their school pictures on Wednesday, Nov 17th. Pictures will be taken during students' PE classes. We will be having a free dress day on picture day - students WILL NOT be required to wear their LMEC uniform on that day, they simply need to follow SDUSD dress code guidelines. Please visit the LMEC student handbook for more details about the dress code guidelines.
Because we are a large school, school pictures have been broken up over two days. Elementary students will be getting their photos taken tomorrow, Nov. 8th.
Our amazing youth advocacy team has organized a kindness challenge that our students & staff will be particpating in from Nov. 8th - Dec. 17th. Each week students will engage in a different series of kindness activities. We will kick off the event with grade level assemblies for our secondary students on Wednesday, Nov. 10th
We wanted to make sure all families are aware that next week, LMEC will be on a minimum day schedule and students will be done with school at 2:00 PM every day next week. This will allow time for elementary students to meet for the parent teacher conferences and for some of our middle schoool students to host student-led conferences to reflect on their progress so far this school year.
Secondary families will be receiving notification soon about your student’s scheduled time slot and Zoom link. If the time does not work, let us know and we will try to reschedule so that you can attend.
What are Student Led Conferences? Your student will lead a conversation about their successes and challenges, show you two pieces of work they completed at school they are proud of, and work with their families to set goals for the remainder of the semester. Research indicates that providing students with opportunities like this to reflect on their learning is a powerful tool to help students "own their learning" and support their academic success going forward.
If you are interested in a more traditional parent conference in addition to the student led conference please contact your child's counselor.
If your child received a 3.0 or higher on the first progress report but you were unable to attend the recognition event we have their certificate available for pick up in the main office.
There is still plenty of time for students to improve their grades but we need to start now. Good grades start with good attendance - please make sure you are sending your child on-time to school everyday. Also, most math teachers are now offering tutoring support. Please contact your child's math teacher directly for details.
And finally, please do not hesistate to reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns. The best way to communicate with your teachers is via email. Please CLICK HERE for a list of all LMEC teacher email addresses.
Our students in collaboration with the SD Humane Society will be supporting a Pup Up Event in Memorial Park. Families that attend will receive free pet microchipping, free pet food & supplies, free pet ID tags, fun treats for pet owners, and a chance for your pet to take a photo with Santa. To register or receive additional information to to sdhumane.org/freechip or email lleonard@sdhumane.org
