Dear LMEC Families,
A friendly reminder that this week, Nov 15-19, all students at LMEC are on a Minimum Day Schedule. School will end at 2:00 PM all week long so parents can particpate in parent teacher conferences with their elementary aged children and so middle school students can participate in student-led conferences.
Also, Fall Break is fast approaching and there will be no school for students November 22-26.
Sincerely,
Melanie Kray
Thank you parents who completed the parent interest survey. We will be hosting our first PTA meeting on November 30th at 4:30 PM on zoom. Please take a moment to review the flyer below which contains the zoom link for the meeting as well as additional details about PTA.
We wanted to make sure all secondary families are aware that 6-8th grade LMEC students will be taking their school pictures on Wednesday, Nov 17th. Pictures will be taken during students' PE classes.
As a result, Wednesday will be a "free dress day." Students WILL NOT be required to wear their LMEC uniform on that day, they simply need to follow SDUSD dress code guidelines. Please review our dress code guidelines below:
is free of any reference to alcohol, drugs, tobacco products, gambling, sex or violance
is free of any depictions/illustrations that demean or negatively represent any gender, race, color, ethnicity, religion, national origin, disability or sexual orientation
appropriately covers the body. That is, no bare midriffs, tank tops, muscle shirts, spaghetti straps, short shorts or high side-seam cut shorts or skirts.
is not perceived as having a gang affiliation, including bandanas, dangling belts, wallet chains, insignia belts/buckles, sports team jerseys/jackets.
does not include spikes, chains or studs (including spike earrings, belts, etc.)
does not detract from the learning environment for staff and students
This is the last week that students can turn in work to improve their grades. Teachers will submit their grades in PowerSchool on Friday at the end of the day and families will be able to view the grades in PowerSchool no later than Wednesday, December 1st. This delay is due to the progress reporting period ending on the Friday before Fall Break.
LMEC will be on a minimum day schedule everyday this week. School ends at 2:00 PM every day. This will allow time for elementary students to meet for the parent teacher conferences and for some of our middle schoool students to host student-led conferences to reflect on their progress so far this school year.
Secondary families should have received information about attending their student-led conference from your child's CREW Advisory teacher.
What are Student Led Conferences? Your student will lead a conversation about their successes and challenges, show you two pieces of work they completed at school they are proud of, and work with their families to set goals for the remainder of the semester. This conference It is not intended to be a traditional parent teacher conference where the teacher is reporting on your child's progress. Rather is intended to be a reflective activity where your child will lead to bulk of the discussion. Research indicates that providing students with opportunities like this to reflect on their learning is a powerful tool to help students "own their learning" and support their academic success going forward.
If you have concerns about your child's progress or are interested in a more traditional parent teacher conference in addition to the student led conference please contact your child's counselor or the the teacher directly.
Many families took advantage of the mental health day the district offered on Friday, Nov. 12th. As our interim Superintent Dr. Jackson indicated in his email, LMEC will automatically convert the absence to an excused absence - if you received a phone call regadring your child's absence on Friday please disregard no further action is need on your part. The attendance clerks were able to excuse most of the absences on Friday and will finish up on Monday.
There is still plenty of time for students to improve their grades but we need to start now. Good grades start with good attendance - please make sure you are sending your child on-time to school everyday. Also, most math teachers are now offering tutoring support. Please contact your child's math teacher directly for details.
And finally, please do not hesistate to reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns. The best way to communicate with your teachers is via email. Please CLICK HERE for a list of all LMEC teacher email addresses.
Our students in collaboration with the SD Humane Society will be supporting a Pup Up Event in Memorial Park. Families that attend will receive free pet microchipping, free pet food & supplies, free pet ID tags, fun treats for pet owners, and a chance for your pet to take a photo with Santa. To register or receive additional information to to sdhumane.org/freechip or email lleonard@sdhumane.org
