"Arrival in Hell has the sheen of a Flemish Primitive panel. A sprawling landscape filled with grotesques and coded characters crowds in around the naked figure in the center. Familiar faces dot the scene, and the picture is sprinkled with textual messages. Historical pigments give it the feeling of an ancient altar-piece. The silvery smooth quality of the imagery puts it into the realm of eternal principle. This crowded hell, situated around a single figure is not our making, but it seems inescapable; like a bullseye that we return to it after straying toward the edges. All activity is in reference to the central figure. Nothing moves; everything is locked in place. The high horizon and numerous vignettes lend us a divine eye. For a moment we can see clearly, terrible as it is."
