"During the pandemic, I started adding knitted yarn to my sculptures. Knitting has become a meditation; while I knit, I can talk on the phone, listen to podcasts, or sit in silence. These pieces are made with my mom’s old t-shirts, old yarn I found around the house, or pieces of scarves. While I repurpose materials in my work, I am also a consumer. During COVID, I am an online consumer. Through the many months of being home, I have collected many Amazon boxes. I liked the idea that each sculpture can fit into a box and be 'returned.'"
Andrea Hersh graduated with an MFA in painting at SUNY, Albany. She also is an instillation artist, sculptor, dancer, teacher, cook, dog lover, mother, grandmother, daughter, wife, liberal, nature lover, sister, sister-in -aw, and friend. She has shown her paintings as well as instillations, dance pieces, and sculptures internationally, locally as well as in NYC. She received a NYFA Fellowship in painting as well as a Specially Opportunity Stipend and has attended residencies. She is sometimes sad, funny, happy, crazy, and loved. She doesn’t consider herself to be a writer and is not known for her spelling. She feels squeezed, pulled, poked, and needled. She feels humbled, strong, weak, old and young. Hersh lives and works in Slingerlands, NY, with her husband and dog.
