Slay Soiree is a Dungeon Crawler Party Game that features 4-Player Multiplayer. This project was inspired by various popular dungeon crawlers like Enter The Gungeon, Bind of Isaac and Crawl. We decided to take that formula and add a party game spin with our quirk cards; adding a unique modifier to the player’s encounters in each room. With Slay Soiree, we hope to combine the two genres to create a fun couch co-op.
Gameplay Direction: For this project, we wanted to make something special while realistically staying within our capabilities. Taking the classic dungeon crawler genre and putting it under a new light. Slay Soiree is still a dungeon crawler by all means, just with a party elements. The quirk card system allows each encounter to be different by mixing enemy types and different quirk modifiers. The idea for this actually came from a previous project. Mackenzie Palmer (Project Lead), had pitched this idea for a Gauntlet remake/remaster project. Using the retro game Gauntlet as a base to then add funny level modifiers that would force the players to adapt change their methods of combat.
Art Direction: Slay Soiree’s art direction came from a place of nostalgia & expression of its enclosed world. The gritty, cartoony aesthetic of “old school” Saturday morning cartoons is one I hold dear & felt it responded perfectly to a couch co-op, dungeon crawler, party game. The choice of colour was one I felt expressed my vision for a game that I had internalised for years & now had its chance to shine as a fully realised idea with a great team of developers.
