The Mix Apprentice is a project based around the mixing and mastering of music. I will be mixing two tracks over the course of this project. One track will be downloaded from the Cambridge Multitrack library and will have been recorded in an A class setup providing commercial sounding stems. My first track will be a hip hop track from the Cambridge multitrack website and it will be mixed using a hybrid approach (hardware and software). My second track will be a lofi track I have produced at home from a few years back that needs mixing and mastering. The whole point of the project is to show the difference of work involved when mixing a home recording versus a high quality recording in a professional studio space.
My name is Thomas Deans. I have been playing music my whole life and at this point in time I have played piano for about 12 - 13 years and drums for about 8 years. I grew up loving music which pushed me to pursue studies in this industry. I have a knack for creating hip hop music but I love exploring new genres and expanding my knowledge on the music world. My aim in the future is to have a studio and enough skills to record all genres and mix and master all artists as well.
Ryan Cali is a hip hop artist who has some what established himself on YouTube, Instagram and Spotify (http://www.ryanouttacontrol.com/). He had one of his debut tracks on Cambridge Multitrack so that anyone could have a go at mixing and mastering it. I chose his track to mix and master because I began my production of music by producing hip hop and I have worked with hip hop in studios outside of SAE but have never had the chance to really sit down and do a solo mix and master on a track in this genre. I used a hybrid approach yet again for this mix and master as well. I don't consider it my greatest work but I believe I have learnt a lot about my own processes and how I go about working in a studio setting.
Perspective is one of the first tracks I had ever made and definitely a classic for me. Revisiting this track and finally giving it some life was very enjoyable for me. I used a hybrid approach (using software and hardware to mix and master) on this track.
The name Perspective was thought up when I was creating the track a few years ago. I used some really weird sampling tricks and played my piano in an unorthodox way to create a unique sounding track. This is why it is called Perspective, because there are different ways of looking at the track. One person may love the track while other may disagree with the methods I have chosen to produce, mix and master my track.
