Photoshop: Image Size and Resolution
Scanner resolution settings: 300ppi (minimum) or higher.
Crop out ALL JUNK.
Variable quality depending on scanner:
Investigate the scanner quality at SAE Library, Kwik Kopy, Officeworks, or a professional-quality Print & Scan service store. Test and optimize scanner controls, such as contrast, brightness, gamma, exposure, and white balance. Or,
Find a camera copy stand.
Reliable Basic Quality: Use a mobile camera (preferably with angled, diffused daylight), and the free Photoscan App by Google Photos - it will turn on your mobile's light, capture 4 overlapping images, and composite them together to even out the lighting. Use Google Help to learn it.

Upload directly to Drive from Photoscan
Please run the Google Drive Desktop Application already installed on your college workstation (e.g. using Start Menu), and log in with your college Google account. It will automatically run on your workstation from now on, and will appear as a virtual drive:
G: in PC File Explorer
or a network drive, in MacOS Finder Click the down arrow to the right, for details >When GDrive and internet are running, all software may now open and link to files via a local folder path on the computer:
G: > My Drive > My SAE Studies > Trimesters >
[This Trimester] > [This Unit]
Try it with PC File Explorer
or in Mac OS Finder, as a network driveThis will work whether on-campus, or off-campus.
Using a private device:
Please install Google Drive, run it and sign in.
This will benefit file linking, reduce uploading/downloading and file management, saving us all important and valuable time for creativity.
To access shared folders and files more easily, everyone's pathnames should please be the same.
Please
(1) For individual GDrives
Navigate to
G: > My Drive > My SAE Studies > Trimesters >
[This Trimester]
Rename [This Unit] to
[This Unit - Nickname - Student ID]
Make sure all your project folders and working files are in this folder. Yes, all of them.
Work directly on your files in GDrive, in your creative software.
You should not need to keep your files on any other devices, except as backups.
(2) For class GDrives or team GDrives
Click your facilitator's link, to open it in Chrome
Folder dropdown menu > Add shortcut to Drive
Navigate to
My Drive > My SAE Studies > Trimesters >
[This Trimester] >
[This Unit- Nickname - Student ID]
Add Shortcut
(3) For Facilitators
You may wish to add shortcuts to student's individual or team GDrives in a central GDrive folder for convenience.
Please kindly organize & label your main project files, by renaming them with simple, clear names, using a system. Example:
Consistent, short name on the left side, doesn't change.
Then the version number
Then optional description AFTER the version number
name-vhero.ext [main file, latest/best]
+backup [folder]
name-v1.ext [old version]
name-v2.ext [old version]
Please keep and supply all version history in GDrive. Don't delete anything, just move it to a +backup folder.
All hi-res images must be completed in Photoshop layers and supplied in your GDrive folder as Photoshop .TIF file format with LZW compression.

Minimum size: 1 or 2 keyframes per A4 page, 1 preferred, 16x9 aspect ratio, must please be clean and sharp for 1920x1080p

See Storyboarding Fundamentals and Project 3 Detail Brief for templates.
Capture digitally, using
A large good-quality scanner at 300 ppi - test different scanners and controls such as contrast and brightness for best results.
A decent camera and camera copy stand.
The Google Photoscan app for both iOS and Android usually gives better results than your phone's default Camera app. For any type of camera or mobile: use a good spot with even light, no shadows, and angled, diffused fill light, e.g. near a big window.
Import (Place) into Photoshop layers
Drag and drop images into a Photoshop template canvas, such as this basic A4 landscape.
Finish digitally, in Photoshop:
Straighten the image, and Crop all junk out, or Select junk and delete it.
Color correct, and tone correct. First, test with Image > Auto Tone, then either Image > Adjust > Curves, or Image > Adjust > Levels, to balance tones.
Erase or paint out dirt.

(Highest resolution and quality )
File > Save As
TIF / TIFF
Image compression: LZW
Layer compression: RLE
This will greatly reduce your project master file size, retain highest quality, and is better than PSD files.
Upload TIFs to GDrive
Use TIF extension instead of TIFF, for cross-platform compatibility and GDrive
You must supply full resolution TIF files in GDrive folders and ensure your GDrive is easy to find in your web pages.
(Compressed / portable formats)
File > Save As a Copy...
JPG file format, quality 8, or
PNG file format, 24 bit
or
File > Export > Export As...
JPG file format, quality 8, or
PNG file format, 24 bit
or
File > Export > Layer Comps to Files...
This exports many layers at once, to a numbered sequence, of JPG or PNG files
This is useful for sequential drawings, such as storyboard keyframes.
You must make a Layer Comp sequence first. See Storyboarding a Scene - Photoshop, Layer Comps - Tutorial, Video, 15 mins
Some web page editors will cap image sizes in web pages.
You must also save the full-resolution original files in GDrive, in the correct folders.
Use your investigation skills to learn your web page editor, and display your images nicely.
Ensure your GDrive folder is also easily accessible from your home web page for this unit.
