Creating depth using 1 point perspective, repetition and scale
Start with
Light blue construction brush, 5-10px, 20-30% opacity
Make a Rule of Thirds 'Guide Layout' in Photoshop
Construction (layer): draw a straight horizon line, and a vanishing point, in light blue, low opacity, thin lines.
Tree (layer): draw a simplified silhouette of a tree.
Construction (layer): Drop back to light blue / 20% opacity. Mark the center top and center bottom of the tree. In light blue, draw straight convergence guidelines (orthogonal guidelines) from the top center and bottom center of the tree, to the vanishing point.
Tree (layer): Duplicate the tree shape, then move and scale the copy, so the top center and bottom center of the copy fit neatly in-between the top and bottom convergence lines.
Once you have 2 trees, you can calculate the spacing of all trees, as shown in last week's Perspective lecture - see fence post illustration. The spaces between the copies decreases with distance. This spacing can be easily calculated, visually.
Construction (layer): Draw a diagonal line, starting from the top center of Tree 1, and passing through the center of Tree 2, to the lower convergence line. Where the diagonal intersects the lower convergence line, this will give you the position of the bottom center of the next Tree.
Tree (layer): Duplicate the tree shape again. Move Tree 3 so the center is at the new position, then scale it to fit neatly between the convergence lines. Keep going, spacing the copies like fence posts.
Create one long row of trees.
Decrease the opacity of each layer gradually, to get a quick effect of fading contrast with distance.
Duplicate Tree 1 again. Move this tree copy sideways, to the other side of the composition, leaving space for an avenue of trees.
Construction (layer): mark the center top and center bottom of the new tree. In light blue, draw straight convergence guidelines (orthogonal guidelines) from the top center and bottom center of the tree, to the vanishing point.
Tree (layer): Duplicate each tree again, move them to the other side of the avenue, and fit them in-between the convergence lines. You should not need to scale them again. You will now have an avenue of trees.
Optionally, create some shrubbery, grass, or other minor shapes, and duplicate them along with the trees, to create a more complex, natural scene.
Time yourself, 15-25 mins in class. Once this time is up, move to the next exercise.
Upload to GDrive.
You may
add to this exercise later in outside class time,
use it in your Project 3 if desired, or
use a similar technique for a Project 3 background
note the (optional) color example below
Once the time is up, please move to the next exercise.
Short discussion and overview.
Due today, for in-class feedback.
Feedback will be given during in-class activities.
12 background roughs
1 finished A4 background
Submission due end of Week 10
A sure-fire way to make a decent composition in minutes!
Break each scene into Foreground, Midground and Background
Use new layers in your Photoshop fileKeep it SIMPLE!
Time yourself, 25 minutes. Once the time is up, save the file, upload to GDrive, and move to the next exercise.Advanced examples (more complex, must be simplified)
Simplify, simplify, simplify
Simplify, simplify, simplify
Search for an example photo of each of the following composition techniques. You must identify and draw the lines on each image in Photoshop with a RED BRUSH. Save your images to your GDrive and/or Mahara before week 11. This will be a cheat sheet to use while storyboarding. You may also use images from the lecture slides.
Rule of Thirds
Symmetry, Asymmetry
Depth through foreground, midground and background (contrast change)
Negative space, and detail spaces vs empty spaces
1st focus point, 2nd focus point, 3rd focus point.

Storyboard Conventions
You must please absorb and fully understand this page, its tutorials, video, example files, and contents, unsupervised.
Go to Storyboard Fundamentals for ALL TEMPLATES including digital, traditional, etc.
Storyboard Template, Digital
This template is designed for developing to contemporary HD (1920*1080) (16:9) standards. The larger format lends itself to more detailed work.Weekly outside-class-time is 6 hours per week.
Use a calendar and schedule your recurring time, with access to tools, software and equipment. Please do any in-class exercises and Project work due, whether you attended or not.
