This is my coil and carve project. This project was our introduction to the coil technique, My project ended up being a thick walled cup with spiraling cuts around its circumference with green glaze around it. To make this cup we started with coils about the same thickness as a thumb and coiled them around a base that is about 1/4 inch thick. you can see in the photo above how the buildup looked (although that photo is not of the cup) these cups are very simple and help you because they are easy to fix and repair if the clay cracks. after finishing coiling the cup I let it half dry, until it was firmer than when i was originally building it. I then took a gouging tool and cut slots into the clay that spiral from top to bottom . I then let the clay dry for a couple of days and bisque fired it. once it was bisque fired I glazed the inside and out with (--------) glaze and fired it for the second time. However I did not layer the glaze thick enough so you can see more color from the clay than i originally desired.
Overall I do not have any strong feelings either way for this piece, it was a learning experience for me and it definitely shows through in the final product, it being a little lopsided and uneven, and with the glaze being too thin. but I am glad i did this project because it taught me more about working with clay. if i did this project again than i would make the walls thinner and make a more intricate carve design. My glaze would be layered thicker so that you can not see as much of the clay beneath the object.
