Ceramics

Final reflection.

During this semester class the work I am the most proud of is my artist inspired piece. I am the most proud of this because It was more complicated to make the shape and I also played with new ways of glazing that I had not done before. First I started with a slab I rolled on the slab roller, I then made a paper mold that i used to size the slab and then rolled the slab up into a cone using the paper as a mold to keep the clays shape. Once the clay dried over the course of a couple days I then put on some underglazes dripping them from the top and bottom to make it look like a volcano. I am very proud of how the final product turned out because it looks very visually appealing and let me use the clay and glazes in ways that I had not used before. This project helped me get more of my "style" in ceramics.

This class has changed the way I looked at ceramics in many mays. First of all it has made me appreciate the ceramic art ive seen from accomplished artists, before this class I for lack of a better word discounted their art, thinking that if i had enough time that I would be able to make something similar. After taking this class and working on my own art I am in awe with the works of art that these artists make. Saying that they would be incredible hard to recreate would be an understatement. For any average person they would be borderline impossible. This ceramics class has certainly changed my appreciation for ceramic art in an incredible way.

My recommendations for how to improve this class is to set much more concrete deadlines. If you set hard deadlines the kids will need to get the projects done by that date and would not be able to leave the work till the last week or two of the class. I had this problem as well during the whole semester. I didnt feel the push to get my work done as much as I needed to so i waited to glaze or do my digital portfolio until the last second. turning my finals week into a mad dash to glaze and photograph and write artist statements. If i had finished all the projects when they were originally due it would have made my last week or two much less rushed.
