Self-Awareness has meaningful consequences that can impact relationships and day-to-day well-being. If students can’t label their feelings it is very frustrating and every student has a different level of emotional self-awareness.
What we say in response to student statements is important as we try to help them become more self-aware.
What they say: Teacher Response:
"I can't do it." "You can't do it yet! We can work on it together!"
"This is too hard." "Who do you think could help you with this?"
"I didn't do this very well" "What do you think you could have done better?"
"I don't feel well" "Is your stomach (or head, etc.) really bothering you, or could it be something else?"
