Any emotion can sometimes feel "too big" for kids and adults. This makes it hard for children to manage their bodies and behaviors. They may yell, stomp, cry, etc.. If we can teach children to recognize that they are starting to feel "a big emotion," it will help them learn to control it. Using a visual thermometer can help children understand the intensity of their feelings. By drawing attention to the intensity, we can help keep that emotion from building and also model the practice of becoming aware of one's emotions. Strategies can also be paired with the intensity to teach appropriate coping strategies.Â
