COVID

Please read if you have practicum experiences at a Froedtert Health facility that start or will be in progress on or AFTER November 1, 2021.

Froedtert Health is requiring that all Froedtert & MCW staff and providers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Nov. 1, 2021. This includes vendors, students and faculty instructors, volunteers, and others employed by or for Froedtert Health. We join many other health systems around southeastern Wisconsin and the United States that have implemented this strategy to decrease the spread of COVID-19.

Froedtert Health is committed to doing whatever we can to provide a safe environment for families, patients and the diverse communities we serve. Safety is a shared responsibility within our health network. The COVID-19 pandemic continues; the highly contagious Delta variant is spreading; and rates of infection, illness and hospitalization are rising. COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death.

This requirement for COVID-19 vaccination is consistent with the Froedtert Health annual influenza vaccination program. As with the influenza vaccine, there is an opportunity to apply for a religious or medical exemption for the COVID vaccination.

All students and faculty instructors must be fully vaccinated by Nov. 1, 2021, to participate in a student placement experience. It is recommended to receive your second shot by Oct. 18 to be fully vaccinated by Nov. 1. Fully vaccinated means it has been at least two weeks since you received your second shot. This is the reason for the Oct. 18 second dose deadline. ***After Nov. 1, 2021, those students and faculty instructors who are not fully vaccinated or do not have a medical/religious exemption will not be allowed on a Froedtert Health site for a student placement experience.

Students and faculty instructors not employed by Froedtert Health can receive the COVID vaccination through:

  • Primary Care Providers

  • Community COVID Vaccination Clinics

  • Local Health Departments

  • Pharmacies

To submit COVID vaccination documentation or medical/religious exemptions, students and faculty instructors should follow the process at their academic institution/school for submitting documentation, just like other health requirements. Documentation of vaccination includes:

  • Copy of official vaccine card

  • Documentation from Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR)

  • Signed letter from the healthcare provider who administered the vaccine that identifies the manufacturer, lot number and date of administration

If you have already completed the verification process for your placement, please provide vaccine documentation or exemption to your school coordinator.

Froedtert Health understands this is a difficult decision for many. Please reach out to your primary care provider to get the facts about the vaccines and the continued threat posed by COVID-19. Vaccination is the best way to protect our staff, patients, families and communities.

For questions, please reach out to your school coordinator or contact: undergradstudents@froedtert.com or gradprogramstudents@froedtert.com

Students may care for patients who are COVID+ or under investigation for COVID (PUI)

· Must follow all infection prevention and control policies and procedures

· Must be fit tested for a respirator (N95) that is available within the assigned department: Halyard Duckbill N95 (46727 or 46827) OR 3M N95 (1860, 1860S, 8210, 8210 Plus)

TRAVEL GUIDELINES (per CDC and WI DHS):

For vaccinated individuals:

  • Fully vaccinated travelers do not need to get tested before or after travel unless their destination requires it

  • Fully vaccinated travelers do not need get tested or self-quarantine upon return

* People are considered fully vaccinated:

· Two weeks after their second dose in a two-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, OR

· Two weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s (Janssen) vaccine

*** If you don’t meet these requirements, you are NOT fully vaccinated***

For unvaccinated individuals or those who do not meet the requirements of full vaccination, the CDC recommends delaying travel until you are fully vaccinated

  • Before you travel, get tested 1-3 days before your trip

  • Get tested 3–5 days after travel AND self-quarantine for a full 7 days after travel

  • If not tested, it's safest to stay home for at least 10 days

  • Self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms; isolate and get tested if you develop symptoms

  • If the student or instructor tests positive, notify the Froedtert Health System Education Coordinator (SEC)

o School placement coordinator/contact instructs student or faculty instructor that s/he may not be at the student placement or on a Froedtert Health facility/site until direction is provided by Froedtert Health System Education Coordinator (SEC)

o SEC communicates to school coordinator/school contact that student or faculty instructor is furloughed from being at a Froedtert Health facility/site until final approval is provided by the SEC

o SEC will determine a return date

o Student or faculty instructor may not return to Froedtert Health clinical site until final approval is provided by Froedtert Health SEC
