Eighth grade English continues the development of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while supporting students to become independent learners, critical thinkers, and effective communicators. Emphasis will be placed on higher thinking skills, and students will be given opportunities to reflect and self-assess their progress toward self-directed reading and writing goals throughout the year.
“The Rise of the Individual in Society” is a major theme that we will explore in our reading, writing, and discussions this year. This thematic unity encourages students to make connections between and amongst texts, their own lives, and the world. The richness of the texts we use will encourage lively discussions and a deeper understanding of both literary conventions and literature’s larger purpose in our lives.
This course is designed to encourage students to cultivate an appreciation of literature and writing while meeting the literacy needs of all learners, offering opportunities for every student to be successful.
