Genetics focuses on human genetics: from DNA to the genes and genomes, the individual, family, and populations. Mendelian inheritance is used to understand pedigrees and the modes of inheritance. Extensions and exceptions to Mendel’s Laws lead to the molecular study of DNA, RNA and proteins as they influence metabolism and genetic disorders. Other studies include embryonic development, chromosomal and gene mutations, genetic counseling, biotechnology and other current topics. The annual field trip to the DNA Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor has given students the opportunity to work with precision laboratory equipment and materials while experimenting with DNA in a controlled environment.
