Read Across America Day

To kick off our 2nd Annual Reading Competition we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday and Read Across America Day by inviting classes to read new and old children's books in the library or in their classrooms. It was a fun day for all the participated and many of the students wished that they could have stayed longer!

Reading Competition

This year we are holding our second annual Students vs Staff Reading Competition! Again we've pitted them up against each other to see who can read the most books in about 2 months. Who will win bragging rights?

Any student that participates in the competition can enter their name into a drawing to win an Amazon gift card! The more books they read the more times they can enter.

The student that reads the most books in that time frame will automatically win an Amazon gift card whose value increases as more and more students participate.

Currently the students have a huge lead over the staff with 45 books read to 14 books read. There's still time RJSHS staff members to kick it in high gear and try to beat the students! You can't let them win that easily!

The competition ends April 29th!

Research in the Library

This month we officially kicked off research paper season with the 9th and 10th graders. They all came in the library for a Noodletools lesson and help with their research. They used a variety of resources including websites, databases, eBooks, and print books.

We also had a class of 12th graders come in and learn about creating an annotated bibliography for their argument paper.

Heather Jenner's review of Fantastic Beasts5/5: Another amazing screenplay by Rowling! Once I truly got started I couldn't stop reading it! I love the characters and the settings. It's so well written that I could imagine just about all the scenes. Definitely a great addition to the Wizarding World books by Rowling. I'm hoping there will be another one!

Heather Jenner's review of Stargirl (Stargirl #1)4/5: What to say about Stargirl? Well, it's hard to explain because the main character, Stargirl, is hard to explain. She's the person in school that you just cannot make sense of. You don't know weather to like her or to stay away from her. You're not sure if she's acting or if it's really her. She does seem to capture the attention of one High School boy, Leo. But will being with her totally ruin his reputation? This book celebrates nonconformity but also shows the reader just how hard it is to be different in a world that wants everyone to be the same.

Heather Jenner's review of Top Prospect3/5: Okay, so this really is a good book but I only gave it three stars because sports fiction just really is not my genre. Travis, a 9th grader in high school, has big dreams for a future in football. After all, he was a star quarterback by the time he even started middle school. When the infamous local college football coach comes to recruit his older brother he makes Travis an offer that seems too good to be true. A spot on the team with a full ride scholarship. Heather Jenner's review of The Librarian of Auschwitz5/5: This book blew my mind! Almost literally! There were moments that I found myself in shock and awe, laughing, crying, angry, and even bewildered. Itubre has crafted, in my opinion, a jaw dropping Historical Fiction book rich with true details about Aushwitz and WWII. You will not want to put it down! Ever! Right until the very last word Itubre had me entranced! I want to read it again and I just finished it!

Heather Jenner's review of Roller Girl3/5: Astrid is trying to find herself in her summer before Junior High School starts. She has always done everything with her best friend Nicole but things are changing and she needs to figure out herself without Nicole. What kind of person does she want to be? Can she be the kind of friend that Nicole wants or does she need to branch out on her own and be herself. This graphic novel really is a good story about about growing up, changing friendships, and working hard towards a goal. It puts across a good message and it's a great read for any preteen.
