Spooky!

The theme this month was SPOOKY!  If you didn't have a chance to come into the library this month you missed all the cobwebs, spiders, ghosts, ghouls, skeletons, and of course pumpkins!

We pulled a lot of scary, spooky books to get students more in the Halloween mood.  If you feel like reading something that gives you chills ask some of our students as they have checked some out themselves.

Classes in the Library

The library hosted several classes this month.  Some came to work on projects others came for a lesson in the library.

Mr. Bryden's first period class was working on researching the history of certain inventions.  The students came to the library to learn how to use an encyclopedia, indexes, and how to gather citation information.

Mrs. Wright's college English class also came into the library this month and learned about annotated bibliographies.  I don't think they were thrilled about the topic but they certainly learned a new skill that they will be using from now on in their education.  This lesson also set them up to begin a sonnet unit with Mrs. Wright.

Mrs. Jenner's Book Reviews

I've been a little lax in sharing my book reviews with you all.  As you recall, I have challenged myself to read all the books in the library.  Yes, it is going to take me a very long time.  No, I might not be able to do it but what's a challenge without a little risk!  Here are four of my book reviews so far.  Click on the titles below:

Recently, I created a new citation sheet based on the 8th edition of the MLA format.  The changes made to the format made creating citations sound difficult but really the changes make it easier!  No longer is there one format for an encyclopedia article and another for a website and yet another for a magazine.  Now, all types of sources are created based on the process of documentation.  What does this mean?  It means that each and every citation should try to include core elements.  These core elements may change in font style and punctuation depending on the source and the container but each citation, no matter they type of source, will contain the same core elements.  This change was made because now we might able to find the source in multiple different formats; i.e. a journal article, a website, or an eBook, because of the increase availability of materials online.

For more information please refer to the citation sheet that I have created below or stop in and see me!  I would also be more than happy to do a lesson on creating citations with your class.  Many of the online citation generators like NoodleTools and EasyBib have already changed over to the 8th edition of MLA but sometimes technology can make mistakes so it is always a good idea to show students what a tool like that is actually trying to do.
