April 2018

Displays

This month we had a few displays up in order to encourage students to read.  Since April is National Poetry Month we displayed some of our poetry books and while none were checked out to our knowledge we did see several students and staff members reading them while in the library!

Our fiction display went from "Reading Around the World" to "Books for Gamers, Artists, Romantics, and Comedians".  Hopefully, we can peak the interest of our students one more time before they are consumed by thoughts of the end of the year.

We also thought that now would be a good time to spread some positive thoughts throughout the school.  So, our library bulletin board has been transformed into a "Take What You Need/Give What You Can" board.  It is already generating a lot of positive messages from our students.  My hope is that by the end of the year it will be completely full and students and staff will be giving and taking from it on a regular basis!

Classes in the Library

Right after spring break our juniors came into the library to begin working on their English 11 research paper.  The were given the task to research two different authors and their works.  Their research required them to use many of the print reference materials in our library.  They also used several of our online databases.  With this research they had to state which author was the most relevant today and why.  I'm curious to see how their research turned out!

Library of Congress Book Surplus Program

Early in the year we signed up to take part in the Library of Congress Surplus Book Program; in which Congressman Tonko partakes.  We were lucky enough to be selected!

The Library of Congress takes in around 20,000 items each day. As you can imagine, it is nearly impossible to store all these items even for a library the size of the Library of Congress.  Therefore, this book surplus program was set up in order to donate new and used items to school and public libraries all around the country!

On April 30th Congressman Tonko stopped by our school to deliver over $885.00 worth of books to our students.  Our Student Council President and members of the Key Club and Builders Club were present in the library to receive the books on behalf of the school and to speak with Congressman Tonko.

Resource

For this months resource I would like to introduce everyone to our new Library Automation System.  We have successfully transitioned from OPALS to Destiny Follett and are excited with all the new possibilities it holds.  While we are still figuring out all the ins and outs of this complex new system I want everyone to be aware that now when you are using the card catalog it will look much different.  As we figure out more and more about what the system can actually do for us I will be sure to share it with you!  For now, please just take a gander around the new system and get a feel for it!
