Teaching Strategies
1. Composing Unit Songs Tailored for Students with Moderate Special Needs
In addition to incorporating the learned musical elements into the melody, these elements are also thoughtfully embedded in the lyrics. This allows students to learn music theory through singing and movement activities, thereby enhancing memory retention and increasing their interest in learning.
2. Game-based Learning
Abstract musical concepts are integrated into interactive games, enabling students to learn in an enjoyable and engaging way.
3. Digitalized Teaching
With funding support from the Innovation and Technology Fund for Better Living, the subject of Music has developed three augmented reality (AR) interactive music textbooks for reference and use by special schools and primary schools across Hong Kong.
Music Textbooks (Books 1-3) Developed under the Innovation and Technology Fund for Better Living
In addition, the subject of Music makes use of original learning apps developed by our school, along with online e-learning resources such as Chrome Music Lab, to enhance students’ interest and concentration in learning. These tools also help foster students’ self-directed learning skills, thereby improving overall learning effectiveness.
4. Collaborative Learning
Collaborative learning among students of varying abilities during instructional activities not only effectively reduces idle time in class and enhances students’ attention but also promotes peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and skill development, thereby boosting students’ confidence and engagement in learning.
Simulated Scenario Teaching
Role-playing activities not only enhance the enjoyment of learning and increase student engagement but also deepen students’ understanding and retention of the content, thereby improving learning effectiveness.
Curriculum Highlights
1. Musicalized Lesson Design
In addition to using the “Good Morning/Afternoon Song” and the “Goodbye Song” at the beginning and end of each lesson for greetings and closure, teachers also incorporate original songs such as the “Sit Properly Song” and the “Happy Learning Song” to remind students of classroom rules and to create a positive and engaging learning atmosphere.
2. School Performances
The subject of Music actively participates in the “Mini Talent Show”, providing all students with the opportunity to perform on stage and present their learning achievements every academic year.
3. External Competitions and Performances
Through performances at shopping malls and community centers, as well as participation in various music competitions, students are given opportunities to be recognized by the community, which enables others to appreciate their unique talents. These experiences also help to enhance students’ self-confidence.
On-Campus Concerts
The subject of Music invites various music ensembles to perform and conduct interactive teaching sessions, providing opportunities for all students to participate. These experiences help broaden students’ horizons and enhance their music appreciation skills.
Piano Remediation Overview
Since 2002, the school has implemented Piano Remediation. In 2003, school received funding from the Quality Education Fund to launch the project titled “Special School for Children with Moderate Intellectual Disabilities: Enhancing the Learning Abilities of Students with Autism through Music Remediation.” This initiative has been in place for over a decade. Initially targeted at students with autism, Piano Remediation has since been extended to the entire school, providing all students with the opportunity to learn piano playing.
