On Tuesday, November 14th, the 6th Grade Woodwinds Class performed their first band concert at 7:15PM in the multipurpose room. The class, along with the other Brass class that performed separately, played what it sounded like in the beginning of the year, and progressed to play the most recent songs that they have been learning in the past two weeks. Some of the people in the class that attended the concert also played solos, which means that they played a song by themselves. Some of the soloists were Paul Noth, Hailee Dine, Grayson Paige, Ezra Grile, and Avery Jackson as well as some others.

Quite a bit of people including relatives, people who played in the brass concert, and friends of people who were in the woodwinds class stayed to watch the performance. Members of the yearbook team were also there to take photos of the two classes performing to put into the yearbook. Some of the people who went to the concert to watch include Avery Micheal, Julia Schliesser, Ayden Wampler, a highschooler and the brother of a student in the woodwind class, and other people as well.

The concert started with Mr. Koehler, the band teacher for EJHS, introducing the concert and explaining what the woodwind class sounded like in the beginning of the year, followed by the class all playing different and random notes. Then, the class played the first note they learned, the four notes they learned after. After that, the class finally started playing the first few songs they learned, and started progressing to the most recent. Some of these songs include Hot Cross Buns, We Will Rock You, London Bridge, A Mozart Melody, and Ode to Joy. A few other songs were played too. There were also people giving out brochures that had the student name and song lists as well as what instrument they play and other brochures sponsoring a music program called “Indiana University Young Winds” which starts in January 2024.

Some people in the woodwinds concert made some noticeable mess ups, but the concert went relatively well. However, Maggie Johnson, a 6th grader who plays clarinet, said, “I think we definitely needed more work before playing at the concert.” Other 6th graders though the same as well, including Charlotte Lucas, who explains that some of the reasons why there were people making errors is because of Mr. Koehler, who supposedly suddenly changed how they played the notes of some songs, causing people to play too fast.

The concert ended at around 7:45 and the woodwinds stood up to get pictures taken of them at the end. Most of the woodwind students went back to the band room to put their stuff away and went home, and the parents left. Overall, the performance was pretty good for their first concert. The next time they perform a concert will be on March 4th of next year.
