What is Effective Explanation?
Effective Explanation is the tutor's ability to accurately and concisely explain concepts, instructions, and ideas to the student during the lesson.
Why do we need to effectively explain during lessons?
Correct and effective explanations help students understand and use the language in real-life settings.
How do we explain effectively?
For an effective feedback, remember to do the following:
ABC: Accuracy, Brevity, Clarity

These are the 3 key elements of an effective explanation.
⦿ Accuracy - information given should be correct
⦿ Brevity - explanation given should be concise
⦿ Clarity - explanation given should be clear and direct to the point
Ensure student engagement
Ensure student engagement
The tutor needs to make sure that the student is engaged well to ensure the effectivity of the explanation. To do this, you can follow these tips.
⦿ Provide a simpler synonym.
(ex. Precisely - exactly)
⦿ Do not always provide dictionary meanings as these may be too technical or difficult. Adjust as needed for the student's level.
(ex. Precisely - definitely or strictly stated, defined, or fixed)
⦿ Refer to online dictionaries.
(ex. britannica.com/dictionary and dictionary.com)
⦿ Use the word in a sentence.
(ex. The train left precisely at 13:00.)
⦿ Send links to images.
❗ For beginner students, it might be more challenging to ask them to make their own sentences. Comprehension checks can also be done by asking relevant questions regarding the newly introduced vocabulary.
Ex: New word - mushy
"Can you think of another food that is 'mushy'?'"

The chat box is one of the most important tools in online tutoring. Ideally, tutors use the chat box from the start until the end of class. Since most students are visual learners, it is vital to multitask and ensure notes are sent efficiently via chat box.
