What is Level Adjustment?
Level Adjustment is the tutor's ability to adapt to the student's capability and understanding. The tutor should be able to identify the English skill level of the student and adjust their speaking pace, word choice, and talk time accordingly.
CEFR is a comprehensive description of what a learner can do in a language-neutral format.
CEFR-J (CEFR-Japan), which is an equivalent of the RareJob levels, is designed for use in Japanese English education.
It is important for tutors to know CEFR-J, its corresponding RareJob Levels, and can-dos, for them to effectively adjust to the student's English skill level.
Why do we level adjust?
Adjusting one's teaching approach will greatly help the student understand and use lesson concepts effectively.
How do we level adjust?
To adjust to the student's level, tutors must mirror the student's speaking pace, be mindful of their word choice, and ensure appropriate talk-time.
Tutors should mirror the student's speaking pace. This can be done by initially talking slowly during the introduction while observing and gradually adjusting to the student's level. Talking too fast might lead to misunderstandings and speaking too slow might bore the student and cause disinterest to listen and participate.
Word choice refers to the vocabulary used by the tutor during the lesson. Tutors should use simple words and try their best to give concise instructions and explanations.
❗ Tutors may prepare an online dictionary for quick reference. In the event that a tutor used a difficult word, they may give the simpler synonym of the word instead.
Tutors should give enough opportunities for students to increase their speaking duration during the lesson.
Ideally, tutor talk time should be reduced so students can have more time to speak and practice the target language.
Tutors can help their students speak and practice more by:
⦿ Utilizing exercises to encourage students to speak more
⦿ Using open-ended questions to encourage the student to answer in longer sentences
⦿ Asking follow-up questions so students can expound on basic ideas
⦿ Giving enough time for the student to think of an answer
⦿ Avoiding irrelevant talk
