What are compliments?
Compliments are affirmations and praises given to our students to help them stay motivated during their lessons.
Why do we need to give compliments?
Tutors should give their students compliments to inspire them.
How do we give compliments?
The tutor should give timely and a variety of compliments to keep the student motivated and engaged during the entire class.
When do we give compliments?
Tutor: We have finished Practice, Step A Exercise. Great Job! Let's go to the next part!
Tutor: You used the grammar tips during our role play activity. Very good!
Tutor: Please repeat the correct pronunciation, /l/ like [lahyk].
Student: Like [lahyk]
Tutor: Good job!
Watch out for the following:
⦿ Untimely or unnecessary praises: giving praise in the middle of a dialogue
Student: (read a line from the dialogue with proper pronunciation)
Tutor: Nice reading! (then read a line from the dialogue)
⦿ Use of praise as fillers
Tutor: Do you have questions?
Student: No questions.
Tutor: Very good! Let's go to the next part.
⦿ Inappropriate use of praise: giving praise even if the student's answers are incorrect
Tutor: According from what we read, what are his complains?
Student: He complain about the ride to Tokyo.
Tutor: Good job! Let's correct your answer.
⦿ Lack of compliments
Student: (gave a correct answer in the first item)
Tutor: Okay, please answer the next item.
Focus on:
➼ Asking relevant and interactive questions
(After doing an activity)
Tutor: Do you have questions?
➼ Giving appropriate responses
Student: I have no question.
Tutor: Okay. Let's go to the next part.
➼ Acknowledging the student's effort
(After reading the dialogue)
Tutor: Thank you for reading the dialogue with me.
It is okay to sometimes use Japanese compliments when praising beginners or young learners.
Sugoi desune! (すごいですね) - Fantastic!
(The student applied the pronunciation correction of the /l/ sound.)
Tutor: Sugoi desune!
Jōzu desune! (じょうずですね) - You're good at this!
(The student followed the tutor's instruction to read the words again. There were no major errors in the pronunciation.)
Tutor: Jōzu desune!
