Our fifth and sixth classes all undertook investigations into three different topics. All findings were detailed on slides, posters and websites/apps in preparation for a trip to Dublin for the BT Young Scientist Exhibition in the RDS. Unfortunately, icy roads and weather warnings meant it was not safe for us to travel to display our work in person and to learn from other schools all over Ireland.
Prepared by Fifth Class (Mrs Carey's class)
In this project, we focussed on the challenges faced by deaf and blind people as well as wheelchair users when shopping in supermarkets. We explored supports already in place and suggest possible future inventions/supports.
Prepared by Sixth Class (Mrs Gilvarry's class)
When brainstorming for project ideas, we discovered that a lot of us have allergies at different times of the year. We explored a number of allergies in the hope that there will be greater awareness of the discomfort they can cause. All our findings have been detailed on a dedicated website that can be viewed at this link.
Prepared by Fifth/Sixth Class (Ms Reape's class)
This project started with an analysis of packaging and we focussed on how much packaging is used to protect 'crisps' compared to the amount of crisps you actually get. Then we explored the difference between the 'unit price' and the 'per kg' price of potato products as detailed on the Tesco website. Similar prices exist in other supermarkets also. In summary, we can buy uncooked potatoes for about €1 per kg and yet we pay about €20 per kg for crisps.
We also created an app using Glideapps to illustrate the unit price and per kg price for potato products. It can be viewed at this link
We also noticed that almost all potato products are priced <€5 but rise to about €20 per kg depending on how much the potato is processed and packaged.
