Greetings,

As we are well into Fall and the end of the year is quickly approaching, we must pause to acknowledge the losses and triumphs that shape our MaPS community. First and foremost, it is with heavy hearts that we recognize the loss of two of our valuable faculty members, Teresa “TK” Kelly and James Bailey. Their contributions have been immeasurable, and their absence will be deeply felt. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for their dedication and commitment to our university, and we will keep their memories close as we move forward.

As we remember them, we also celebrate many remarkable accomplishments, from faculty publications to departmental programs and the introduction of innovative school initiatives. Your collective hard work and dedication have paved the way for excellence, and we applaud your continuous pursuit of growth. Furthermore, we are thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our MaPS history. Our school is celebrating 15 years of commitment to the Purdue University community. We have planned an entire week of festivities to commemorate this remarkable journey. The celebration week will culminate in a one-hour live session, offering us all a unique opportunity to come together, reflect on our shared journey, and celebrate the successes that have defined  The School of Multidisciplinary and Professional Studies (MaPS)

In Memory

The Department of English and Rhetoric is saddened to announce the passing of full-time instructor Teresa “TK” Kelly, who had been with the university for over 20 years. TK was well known for her dynamic support of many Purdue Global initiatives and her dedication to students and her colleagues. She was a guiding presence through times of change, most recently helping 17 new full-time faculty transition to their new role during the restructuring. A Padlet site has been created for those who wish to share memories, photos, and/or condolences with her family. A memorial dinner with a virtual

component so that her virtual PG family can attend if they wish is being planned for later this month.

The Department of Humanities & Social Sciences is saddened by the loss of our colleague James Bailey. Many of us worked closely with James throughout the years as he served as an FTA and then as a PT faculty member here for 15 years. He will be deeply missed by faculty and students alike. We have set up a Padlet where we can all share our thoughts and condolences with his family. Please consider participating.

Announcing Circle of Community Champions

We are excited to introduce a new initiative that celebrates the spirit of giving back and the power of community within MaPS. We proudly present the Circle of Community Champions quarterly Volunteer Recognition Program, an opportunity to showcase the outstanding volunteer efforts of our students, faculty, & staff.

The Circle of Community Champions program is designed to spotlight those individuals who selflessly dedicate their time and energy to positively impacting their communities. Whether volunteering at local nonprofits, participating in charitable events, or engaging in community service projects, these actions deserve recognition and praise.

We are confident that the Circle of Community Champions program will serve as a testament to the remarkable dedication and selflessness within the MaPS community. Together, we can showcase the positive change that can be brought about by individuals who embody the values of service and community engagement.

To join the list, please submit your volunteer information here by November 27th. Also, please inform your students about the program and encourage them to do the same.

Hispanic Heritage Month Recap

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to an end, we want to reflect on the AMAZING events that have taken place within our PG community. We aimed to share traditions, customs, and experiences while promoting understanding and respect.

Here’s a recap of this month's festivities:

Learning and Leadership

Arts, Culture And Community

We want to extend a thank you to our Heritage Month Planning Committee, specifically Kristin Early, Barbara Kent, Gonzalo Gutierrez, Guilene Williams, Jessi Eaton, Julie Torres-Roman, Mary Laska, Lori Morrissette, Nancy Santiago, Citlally Jimenez, Tammy Chiong, Vanessa Myers, Barbara Green, and Ty Baker for making this month a success!!! I am eternally grateful for everyone who graciously gave of their talents and time. I also want to extend a special thank you to Liz Fitzgerald for her expert technical assistance during the Keynote address and to Julie Torres-Roman for her amazing facilitation during that event. We couldn’t have found a better MC for the event if we hired one! I also want to highlight the passion and commitment of Citlally Jimenez, who took the time to record cooking videos that featured a new recipe for each week of the month. The recipes were easy to follow and delicious. Who knew we had a celebrity chef in our midsts!!! Finally, I would be remiss if I did not provide a special acknowledgment of the hard work behind the scenes of Ty Baker and Jessi Eaton, who made the coordination of this month’s activities look effortless.

Let us know your thoughts concerning the activities and your experience by providing feedback here: OCIE Post-Event Survey. We are continuously striving to improve, so your feedback is invaluable.

Please look out for OCIE-sponsored events in honor of Native American Heritage Month in November. We look forward to sharing new experiences with you then!

Faculty Publications

Michael Heeren, MA.  Math Faculty

Math faculty member Michael Heeran has some exciting publication news:

The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) accepted and published his article submission titled How Many Boxes Can Fit in That Container? A Multifaceted ProblemSolving Adventure in its current Fall 2023 Issue.

Congratulations, Mike!

Matt Peeples Math Faculty

Math faculty member Matt Peeples completed a year-long project writing a Calculus I workbook for the Naval Academy Prep School.  It has been printed as a physical book for his students this year.

From Matt: "I'm hoping it will become a full fledged textbook, as virtually all of the problems and notes in the workbook are my own from over the years.  Currently, it's made to go with an open-source textbook from Openstax in Calculus in the course I teach for MAPS."

Congrats, Matt!
