On March 14th (3.14), people across the country celebrate Pi Day. Pi is the irrational number describing the ratio of a circle's diameter to its circumference (approximately 3.141592653, but it continues at random to infinity). This special day also happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday! Some people celebrate by eating pie, others celebrate by attempting to recite as many digits of Pi that they can. Assistant Chairs; Leslie Johnson (Math) and Nikki Williams (Science), coordinated the School of General Education's annual Pi Day Celebration with a Kaltura video contest. The creativity was outstanding!

Paige Erickson, M.A.,FT Faculty, Humanities & Social Sciences Dept.

The Southern Humanities Council held its annual interdisciplinary conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in early February 2020. With the theme β€œRevelry and Reverence,” papers were presented on topics such as disability studies, creative writing, art history, and psychology. Paige Erickson, a FT faculty member in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, presented her creative non-fiction story, β€œFour GΓ‘bors,” and her paper, β€œAdventures in the Hungarian Language: The Revelry of Failure and a Reverence for Forty-Four Letters.” The Southern Humanities Council will soon post a call for papers for their 2021 conference. Purdue Global faculty are invited to submit and are gladly welcomed into this interdisciplinary community of artists, writers, musicians, and academics.

The SoGE was well represented at the National Organization for Student Success (NOSS) conference (formerly known as the National Association for Developmental Education [NADE]) in Nashville, Tennessee at the sprawling Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. The conference took place March 4-7 despite devastating tornadoes in Nashville in the days leading up to the conference. Click HERE to see all of the photos taken at the conference!

The 2020 conference theme was Sounds of Success and our presentations certainly fit the theme. There was a special interest in PG presentations on issues related to diversity and inclusion, indicating our leading position in exploring and addressing these important topics. Presentations were given by: Sheryl Bone (FT, Comp/WAC), Galia Fussell (FT, Comp/WAC), Leslie Johnson (Asst Chair, Math), Michael Keathley (Chair, Comp/WAC), Kirsten Meymaris (FT, Math), Tami Tacker (FT, Math), Emily Thompson (FTA, Comp/WAC), Stephanie Thompson (FT, Comp/WAC), Ritu Sharma (FTA, Comp/WAC), Nikki Williams (Asst Chair, Science), Melissa Scranton (FT, Math),Jessica Love (FTA, Comp/WAC), Michael Heeren (FT, Math), Lea Rosenberry (PT, Math), Mary Bruce (FT, Math), and Melissa Scranton (FT, Math).

Leslie Johnson, Asst. Chair, Math stated "NOSS is a great venue for faculty and staff across the School of Gen Ed to meet-up and spend time together face-to-face, while also sharing and learning student success strategies. I would love for as many as possible to put in a proposal for 2021 NOSS in Las Vegas - the more the merrier!" Join your colleagues! If you haven’t attended the NOSS conference yet, give some thought to submitting a proposal for the February 24-27, 2021 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Call for Proposals will open April 1. You can visit the NOSS website for information.

One tip that I have found especially helpful is to address specific observations in seminar as they are observed. For example, I received several emails from students over the past week asking how to view their turnitin report, and what the numbers mean. I am setting aside some time in seminar this week (before their next assignment) to review.

Do you have a best practice or tip you'd like to share? Feel free to email your department chair or fill out the GenEd/OC Digest Spotlight Form found on the homepage!

One of the areas identified for growth after this year’s engagement survey was, β€œI have opportunities to advance and develop in my career.” The SoGE leadership team has put together some concrete steps for those interested in career development. First, for regular FT faculty, interests and opportunities for advancement and development will be discussed and reviewed during annual goal creation and progress reviews. For all faculty, opportunities to discuss interests (e.g., one-on-one sessions, Individual Development Plans (IDPs), and conversations) will be provided at least quarterly. Leadership will look for and share upcoming opportunities to advance and develop careers. Plans for interested faculty may also include cross-training, additional education, challenging assignments, cross-functional projects, etc. as employee specific opportunities. Last but not least, be sure to visit the SoGE Professional Development page to access our PG Careers section.
