Purdue Global had several individuals present at the conference: Kate Scarpena, Stuart Collins, Jennifer Harrison, Tyra Hall-Pogar, Christiana Bevier and Maricel Lawrence . Thank you all for your hard work and continued commitment to the field of education.

Session: "Addressing Civic Indifference in the University Classroom"

Presenters: Kate Scarpena, Stuart Collins, Jennifer Harrison

The topic of civic indifference has been a consistent source of debate in contemporary society. As educators, we may encounter students who express the concern that their voices do not matter. How do university instructors and / or administrators address student concerns regarding barriers to civic engagement?

For our session, we examined how the Purdue Global Civics course encourages students to explore the rights and responsibilities of American citizens, with an emphasis on considering the power of their individual voices. We also addressed how the Purdue Global Civics course provides asynchronous and synchronous opportunities for students to share their perspectives on public policies and civic engagement; therefore, encouraging students to address topics related to access, diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. During the session there was ample participation from session participants. We yielded several potential ideas for follow-up during the upcoming course revision process, including development of a voting plan, possibility of a formal pre/post-course survey in terms of voter registration, possible alignment with other PG coursework, and ways to provide students opportunities for integration of their own local context.

Session: "Futures Thinking: Looking to the future of your institution by 2035"

Presenters: Maricel Lawrence, Kate Scarpena, & Stuart Collins

Central Question Explored: How are institutions using internal or external current events and issues to prompt or guide general and liberal education revision or reform?

Foresight or futures thinking is defined as a discipline that uses signals and drivers of change to think creatively about plausible, possible, probable, and preferred futures by using different techniques and divergent thinking (Bishop, 1998; New Zealand Government - Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, 2021; Smith & Ashby, 2020). At the end of 2021, a group of faculty members, administration, and staff at Purdue Global launched a strategic foresight team to envision our institution by 2035. Our goal is to provide leadership with provocative scenarios discussing our students of 2035, the type of experiences they expect, and the type of portfolio we will be offering them. This foresight project should create insight and stimulate action today to prepare for the future.

In this workshop session, we introduced the audience to a general understanding of foresight, the project that is underway, and a few trends we are studying. Session participants had the opportunity to actively engage in future thinking exercises to allow participants to discuss trends that could impact their institutions and start using foresight practices. One of the key takeaways from this session is the continued need for both training and integration of practices into curriculum. Key emerging questions: how do we teach Futures Thinking and Anticipatory Thinking as a skill? How do we integrate these skills in meaningful ways within existing curriculum/coursework?

Kate Scarpena, EdDHumanities & Social Sciences Department Chair
Stuart Collins, MAHumanities & Social Sciences Faculty
Maricel Lawrence Innovation Catalyst
Tyra Hall-Pogar, PhDAssistant Department Chair
Christiana Bevier, MAProfessional Studies Faculty

Tyra Hall- Pogar and Christiana Bevier gave a presentation entitled: "Examining Professionalism in Today’s Society." This session was a work in progress Lightening Discussion.

Tyra also shared her AGLS experience:

The theme for the conference focused on the flourishing liberal arts education.

Multiple panel discussions and presentations focused on faculty engagement and proper course placement in general education. Technology was also a focus and there were presentations that focused on new virtual viewing of degree plans.

One of the standout presentations was the All-Conference Lunch and Plenary Session:

Leveraging Opportunities and Addressing Challenges While Incorporating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Values in General and Liberal Education. The panelists included Barika Barboza (Miami Dade College) and Wynn Yarbrough (University of the District of Columbia). While it was structured as a discussion about initiatives at their institutions for incorporating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) values in their curriculum, what really stood out was the honesty they brought when discussing successes and failures.

Pam Cox, MA. , FT Adjunct Faculty, Math

Pam Cox, a FT Adjunct Faculty in Math, shared the following tip on Virtual Field Trips. Students really appreciate a Virtual Field Trip to the Math Tutor Center. While sharing my screen during the Unit 2 seminar I take them through all of the steps for finding the Tutor Center, the Math Tutor Center, and an available Tutor. We then "knock on the door" and enter the "room." The tutors are always very helpful and explain exactly what a student can expect during a live tutoring session. Feedback about the Tutor Center Field Trip is always very positive. **Hint-Make sure you click the sound option at the bottom of the "Screenshare" window so the students can hear the tutor explain everything.

Do you have a best practice or tip you'd like to share? Feel free to email your department chair or fill out the GenEd Digest Spotlight Form found on the homepage!

Michelle Cooke, Student (R)

Student/Faculty Meetup

For only the second time in 12 years of teaching for Kaplan/Purdue Global, I got to meet one of my students “live and in person." I discovered that Michelle Cooke lived just across the Ross Barnett Reservoir from me during the first seminar of the 2203C term. It took a while for us to find a time to meet, but finally, on October 5, 2022, my husband and I treated Michelle to lunch at a local restaurant.

It was so much fun to get to meet Michelle in person. She is the kind of student who will make us proud to call her a Purdue Global graduate. Michelle did lots of research before choosing where to pursue her dream of a college degree, and Purdue Global topped her list! Michelle has been working for Chick-fil-A since she was 16 years old. Here she is 30 years later pursuing her dream of a college degree because she wants to become a franchise owner.

Michelle loves our school and spoke highly of her advisor, the Math Live Binders, and her instructors. She is an amazing person and an excellent, hard-working student who is delightful to teach.

Dr. Carolyn Stevenson published a chapter, "Help Me Understand: Effectively Communicating Across Generations" in the Handbook of Research on Strategic Communication, Leadership, and Conflict Management in Modern Organizations.

Faculty Publications

Dr. Barry Regan has some great publication news:

1. The publisher of the textbook Corruption and Scandal in American Sports: Causes and Consequences accepted his three book chapter submissions. They are "Danny Almonte and the Little League World Series (2001)," "Jim Harrick and the University of Georgia (2003);" and "Jerry Tarkanian and UNLV Paying Players (1987-1992)." It is scheduled to be published in early 2023.

2. The Forensic of Pi Kappa Delta journal accepted his book review titled "Resolved: Debate Can Revolutionize Education and Help Save Our Democracy - Book Review." Additionally, in the same journal, a review of his book Leadership Practices in Speech and Debate Coaches: Applying Full-Range Leadership Behaviors to Coaching Intercollegiate Forensics will be published. The issue is scheduled to be published also in early 2023.
