New Professional Studies Programs and the Alternative Credit Center

We have exciting news for the School of General Education! The SoGE is now offering two options for Professional Studies programs: the Bachelor of Science in Professional Studies (BSPr) and Associate of Science in Professional Studies (ASPr). Part of the Dept. of Humanities & Social Sciences, these innovative and highly flexible programs are being offered on a new CustomTrack. CustomTrack is designed to offer students an opportunity to create a customized degree plan to meet their unique professional goals.

There are two program models, term-based or independent. Both models are highly flexible and customizable for students. The term-based models run on standard terms and are instructor-led - similar to traditional PG programs. In contrast, the independent models, transferred from the Open College, are self-paced and assessment-based programs. The BSPr does offer a leadership concentration in both models for students interested in leadership studies. These new initiatives are a team effort involving the entire school. Curriculum and Innovation will be assisting the development of our new Assessment for Skills and Knowledge (ASK) models. The Humanities & Social Sciences Dept. will be assisting in scheduling, curriculum development, and advising pieces since the degrees live within their department. The Composition/WAC, Math, and Science departments have several faculty advisors that will be assisting our professional studies students to create their Individual Learning Plan (ILP). Finally, our former Open College team will continue to assist our independent professional studies students.

In addition, the SoGE is creating an Alternative Credit Center (ACC). The ACC is a SoGE initiative that provides our students with the opportunity to evaluate their subject knowledge in several formats to receive college credit. The ACC will be a centralized repository for all the university course assessments (e.g., open learning, BSPr assessments (formerly PANeLs), course assessments), and experiential credit-earning opportunities. The programs and ACC will continue to expand and grow thanks to incredible teamwork across the school!

The results of our SoGE Theme Contest are in! 2020-2021 marks the next phase of the SoGE with the implementation of the GenEd C plan and the launch of the first two programs completely unique to the SoGE. Keeping this in mind and the core themes that comprise our mission statement, our overarching theme will be: General Education: Cultivating Tomorrow's Possibilities. This is something that leadership worked hard to develop, using a concept submitted by Peg Hohensee, Math Department Chair.

In keeping with this theme and in recognizing that in many ways, there is hope that 2021 will be a symbolic reshaping, a Renaissance after a year with a number of challenges, our theme for the 2021 General Education Conference will be: General Education Transformed: A Renaissance of Equity, Achievement, and Diversity. The core concept for this year’s theme was submitted by Jacob Kaltenbach, an FTA in the Composition Department.

Many thanks to everyone who participated, and we want to make an honorable mention of the following faculty members and administrators who submitted concepts that were strongly considered:

Leslie Johnson Michelle Lis Julie McNamara

Nikki Williams Nathan Nicol Carolyn Stevenson

Peggy Hohensee, Ph.D.Math Dept. Chair

Google Voice Productivity Tip - I use Google Voice to message my students but not always through the mobile app. You can also use Google Voice messaging with a keyboard and the Google Voice website! Its very handy as some students love to message LONG texts. I can be more professional and provide a more detailed response to them when I have my keyboard to write the texts (and copy/paste). Furthermore, I have it set up as a pinned tab in my browser so when I check my email each morning, I can also respond to any texts. Messaging is my new email!

Do you have a best practice or tip you'd like to share? Feel free to email your department chair or fill out the GenEd/OC Digest Spotlight Form found on the homepage!

Overview of the new PG Rubric Project

Purdue University Global (PG) is undertaking a project to improve, through faculty review and application of an approved standard model, rubrics across the university. Although we must update the rubrics to meet D2L’s new rubric experience, updating rubrics to the new experience will provide us with a great opportunity to improve the quality of the assessments. This will provide a consistent experience for faculty and students across the curriculum. It will also provide further analytic data so we can make data-driven decisions about student learning.

Currently, we are using the BrightSpace rubric tool for Course Level Assessments (CLA, GEL, and PC). The new standard rubric for the Seminar, Discussions (DB), and Assignments will be embedded in the courses, similar to CLA rubrics both in look and functionality (see images below). Each department in the SoGE created a standard DB rubric through a faculty-driven process. The Curriculum and Innovation (C&I) team is scheduled to begin uploading the Seminar and DB rubrics for the 2005C term start.

The next phase of the PG rubric project involves Assignment rubrics. Each School is managing the creation of these rubrics for their courses. While the deadline for completing all PG rubrics is February 1, 2021, each department will have specific dates for completing their rubrics. Under the guidance of Celine Hall, Science Department Chair, a team of faculty created a model rubric to help guide the SoGE in creating assignment rubrics. The first training on the new rubric included all Course Leads (CLs) and was held September 29, 2020. In addition to training, the CLs will have access to support from their Chairs, designated faculty, and the ADoC. Please contact your department leadership with any questions about the PG rubric project.

Meet Your soge Faculty Senators

As faculty senators, it is our responsibility to represent you on that committee. As part of the effort to keep us connected, we have created the following Google form. We will review the form on a monthly basis and share your specific comments with the PG Administration. Additionally, you will also be able to review the official meeting minutes from each faculty senate meeting in the PG Faculty Senate official page. We want to encourage you to reach out to us with any questions, concerns or ideas you would like us to share during our PG Faculty Senate Meetings. In addition to using the Google Form, please feel free to reach out to Julie Torres Roman at jtorres-roman@purdueglobal.edu or Mark Burlingame at mark.burlingame@purdueglobal.edu.

Mark Burlingame has taught Composition at Purdue Global since 2015 and currently serves as its Faculty Senate President. He is committed to sharpening his students' writing skills and supporting faculty from across the university. He has presented at numerous PG conferences on strategies for boosting student and faculty engagement, appreciating the literary works of Iris Murdoch, Shirley Jackson, and Geraldine Brooks, and adopting the writing process as an approach to leadership. In March 2020, Mark was recognized for Service Excellence for his role in the Senate and in Composition/Writing Across the Curriculum Department events. Beyond the classroom, Mark spends as much time as possible reading, hiking, and drumming.

Julie Torres-Roman joined Purdue Global (then Kaplan) in 2010. She teaches various undergraduate courses in biology, anatomy and physiology, and general science. Her work as a full-time adjunct faculty and course lead earned her recognition by the School of General Education and her peers. During her time at PG, Julie has served on the Faculty Curriculum Committee and on the Virtual Difference Makers. Previously, Julie was a faculty member at her alma mater, Montclair State University, and at Essex County College, where she taught science courses and helped underprivileged students pursue their academic goals. Her personal mission is to make science more approachable by ensuring that students relate to the concepts they are learning about in the classroom. She is also a trained climate reality leader. In her personal time, Julie volunteers as an Envirothon coach for middle schoolers, as well as a judge for local and virtual science fairs for elementary, middle and high school students.

APA 7th Update

All PG Writing Center, Academic Writer, and Hawkes resources were updated to the APA 7th edition a month ago, so beginning with the -04 terms, the focus should be on following APA 7th. There are still some APA 6th resources available for reference as needed (e.g., If a student started a large project in APA 6th, it’s okay for them to finish in the 6th edition). Students should be informed but not penalized if they accidentally use APA 6th format rather than 7th (e.g., including the unnecessary running head). The official change to APA 7th for PG is on January 1, 2021.

There is more information with resources on our WAC page or by contacting the WAC Advisory Committee at: WAConcierge@purdueglobal.edu
