Although in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and being faced with some unique logistical challenges and opportunities, the 12th Annual General Education Conference was a smashing success! One of the challenges included supporting the effort while using online resources stretched thin due to a surge in the number of people working from home. The opportunities included being able to provide Purdue System faculty as well as faculty from 30 external institutions from across the United States with information and best practices in online instruction as well as other topics related to general education. While we were very fortunate to have experienced only very minor hiccups during the three-day event, the survey results indicate that conference participants were still extremely satisfied with the information shared. Julie Torres-Roman, a FTA in the Science Department and GEC presenter stated, "Our GEC 2020 was another great conference! It presents an opportunity to collaborate with other faculty and to stay informed on current topics. Each year, I obtain new tools that help me to become a better educator and learn new ways to achieve the coveted work-life balance." See Conference Briefs below for additional information.

The 2020 GEC was a huge success! With close to 100 conference proposal submissions, the three day conference reached a new record with 500 participants registered from across 30 institutions including Purdue Global, Purdue University, Ivy Tech and the Association for General & Liberal Studies (AGLS). There were 68 fantastic presentations from PG faculty and staff, as well as from many of these external organizations on important topics related to this year's conference theme "Mission Accepted: Go Beyond with General Education." Christine O'Neal, a FTA in the Science Department and GEC presenter said "Presenting for the GEC is a great way to dive deeper into a topic than you normally would and hear the perspectives of others on that topic."
Behind the scenes, the logistic team led by co-chairs Peg Hohensee and Michele Riley delivered a nearly seamless event. This team provided support for the sessions by building and updating the website, maintaining the Adobe rooms, training hosts, and scheduling the practice and regular conference sessions. Hohensee and Riley did not do it alone; Celine Hall and Nikki Williams assisted with the Mission Crew Specialists, setting up Adobe rooms, and coordinating scheduling pieces for the conference. The team would like to thank the Center for Teaching and Learning for their assistance, General Education Leadership, and the Mission Crew Specialists (below). Finally, a big thank you to everyone who presented and attended! We look forward to seeing you at our 13th Annual GEC in 2021!
If you missed any part of the conference, the presentation archives are available for review for 2020 (and through 2014!).

I emphasize to the students that since we only meet live in seminar one hour per week, the Discussion Board is our classroom. As such, I like to post interesting asides that are related to what we are covering in that unit but not specific to the particular discussion question. That is what I would do in a "regular" classroom. Math history, famous problems and controversies and fun news stories can expand the conversation and give the students food for thought.

In the spirit of delivering on our mission to support the unique needs of our working adult students, the curriculum team is finishing up important revisions of our credit-for-work experience courses EL206 and LRC100. The new version of EL206: Academic Prior Learning Portfolio went live in the 2002B term this past April. LRC100, which will be renamed LRC100: Pathway to College Credit-Portfolio Development is scheduled for a June release date. Both courses teach students how to articulate and organize their work and life experience into an online portfolio thatβs ready to be assessed for undergraduate credit at Purdue Global.
One of the areas identified for growth after this yearβs engagement survey was, βI have opportunities to advance and develop in my career.β The SoGE has organization liaisons to help! Each organization liaison reports and enters important discipline specific information, such as upcoming conferences, workshops, etc., for societies and other associations that they're members of on a quarterly basis. You can view all of the entries here. If you have any important discipline specific information that you would also like to share, you may enter it on the form here.
The 50th Anniversary of Earth Day presented a unique opportunity to engage faculty and staff across PG in environmental issues and education. The Science Dept. teamed up with the VDMs to create a week-long Earth Day celebration. Each day in the week leading up to Earth Day, volunteers provided articles and tips on various environmental topics such as energy and water conservation. These topics and tips were discussed on a Google+ community created for the event. During the week, the VDMβs hosted an exercise challenge designed to get people active and to promote alternatives to driving such as walking or biking. The event culminated in a live, interdisciplinary panel discussion on climate change with speakers from across PG discussing an array of aspects of climate change and how to combat it. The event was a huge success that we hope to continue for many Earth Days to come. Listen to the archive HERE.
