Marie Kendall-Waters
Senior Educational Technologist (Design)

Marie is an experienced Senior Educational Technologist who specialises in instructional design in Higher Education. 

Marie joined the University of Portsmouth in 2007 as one of the first Faculty Online Course Developers based in the Flexible Learning Studio, Faculty of Technology. Since then she has worked in various roles at UoP.  She worked as an Online Course Developer for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science leading a support team in creating online course presence for academics. She went on to join the eLearning Centre within DCQE as an Educational Technologist and later as a Senior Educational Technologist. Marie has worked on an array of creative projects for Faculties and Central services at UoP and has worked on the theme and course design, development and training of numerous VLE's throughout her time at UoP from WebCT, Blackboard (Victory) and Moodle. She also works on the internal and external pages of the UoP CMS, Terminal4 for DCQE.

From 2009 - 2017 Marie led on the development and design of PrepUP website which was a project for pre-entry students. The site provided students that had an offer of a place at Portsmouth with information and guidance on student life at university. It introduced them to the services on offer, course information tailored to the course they had enrolled on (provided  by their course leaders), competitions to win prizes (donated from UoP services: Student Finance, Students' Union etc and local businesses such as the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth Historical Dockyard and Blackwells bookshop) and Facebook groups for students so they could chat to their peers before joining UoP as a way of making friends. The project is now led by Marketing and help and guidance for students can be found on the University of Portsmouth site, along with information on social media  provided by the Welcome Ambassadors.

Since coming back from maternity leave in 2018, Marie has worked on raising the profile of TEL and AcDev. Leading on the teams presence @telportsmouth on social media (Instagram and Twitter) which helps promote events and CPD sessions that are run by the TEL and AcDEV team. Marie leads on Tel Tales which is a blogging site for the team to share their experiences and knowledge. Marie has also designed and developed various Google Sites for the team, along with the first online Blended and Connected Learning and Teaching festival which was held back in lockdown, off the back of this, she created the first online Staff Welcome Event for the HR department. 

Marie developed and designed EXPLORE - which is an interactive resource to support academics in their decision making when it comes to choosing a digital tool and the pedagogical purpose and context.

Marie has a degree in Social Science with Social Policy which she studied as a distance learning student through The Open University. She gained her PgCert and PgDip in Digital Education (Online Learning) through the University of Edinburgh. Marie enjoyed the course so much that she was later employed by the course team at Edinburgh as a Research Associate.

Marie previously worked for Johnston Press PLC as a New Media Manager overseeing the New Media team and creative projects for the South. She specialised in the development of CMS built websites for local businesses as well as front-end design for The News website, created PPC ads, site animation and designed numerous printed publications.
