Where's Winterfest?

As many students may have noticed, for the past two years, Pewaukee High School has not held the traditional pep rally and dance for Winterfest, due mainly to high numbers of Covid cases.

“At that time, our numbers for COVID were in the deep red,” Nadine Sevens, advisor to Student Senate said. “Because of that, the district office and administration said that we couldn't do a dance and that we couldn't do a pep assembly.”

However, despite not being able to hold the traditional Winterfest activities this year, Student Senate organized a wellness week, with activities ranging from trivia at lunch to themed dress-up days.

“Not a full blown Winterfest,” Sevens said. “But we tried to just do little things just to try to boost the morale at the beginning of second semester.”

Students were able to participate in a variety of ways, all of which were meant to boost student morale. One of the most notable events was the opportunity to win prizes, provided to students from each grade at the end of each school day. These included sought-after items like excused absences from resource.

But despite the lack of a Winterfest dance or pep rally this year, students can be assured that Student Senate is working towards bringing this tradition back for next year.

“Just because it didn't happen, doesn't mean it's not going to happen in the future,” Maddy Flynn, also Student Senate advisor, said.

Student Senate has discussed next year’s plans for Winterfest at length, according to Sevens.

“Lilo Goodmanson has her mind set that she wants a Winterfest week and a dance,” Sevens said. “I'd like it to be almost like a mini homecoming.”

With this ‘mini homecoming,’ Student Senate hopes to not only boost the morale of students and staff, but also recognize sports and clubs that aren’t recognized in the fall.

“By not being able to recognize some groups and clubs and organizations in the winter, they're just not getting recognized, you know?” Flynn said. “So that's a huge part of this, too, is recognizing the winter sports and clubs and activities.”

Looking to the future, Student Senate hopes to not only revive Winterfest, but engage with students and staff at PHS with even more events and activities.

“If we get into a good routine,” Sevens said. “I think we'd be able to do a lot more next year.”
