Being a Multi-Sport Athlete
Students have a lot to balance between school, having a job, and maintaining a social life. If you add in a sport that just adds more to juggle and less time in a day. Now imagine managing all of that and playing multiple sports, being a multi-sport athlete in high school can be tough but it has its perks.
Cole Miller, a senior at Pewaukee High School, is a guard for the football team and plays attack on the Lacrosse team (lacrosse isn’t recognized as a school sport). Was asked a couple of questions on what it’s like being a multi-sport athlete and its pros and cons.
How do you manage the schedule of two sports?
“You have to find a flexible job that allows you to change your hours with the season. Try and get work for school done when you can by taking advantage of free periods and weekends. ”
Do you get stressed during multiple sports?
“Playing multiple sports isn’t that stressful but not having an off-season means I’m always trying to balance school, work, and social time with sports which can get stressful.”
Although it may be a little bit more stressful than not having sports to attend, Cole believes there’s still enough time to get work done throughout the week and it might get a little overwhelming but it isn’t too much.
How do you think being a multi-sport athlete affected your life?
“It has taught and built up social skills for me and introduced me to my friends, as well as builds trust within my network of peers.“
Do you think playing football has helped lacrosse and vice versa?
“Staying in sports keeps you in shape for your next season, keeps your speed, and keeps your strength.”
Being part of a team for multiple seasons not only keeps Cole active physically but socially. Playing multiple sports improves your abilities in both sports and allows you to meet new people as well as build stronger relationships because you’re all working hard towards a shared goal. Then when the season is over he’s able to spend time with the friends he connected with during the season.
Sports are a good way to interact with peers and maintain a healthy lifestyle if you enjoy them. Playing multiple is a commitment but if you understand that coming into it you’ll be able to manage a pretty balanced high school life.
