Are you an outgoing Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Color student with a passion for public service? If so, a great paid internship opportunity may be waiting for you at Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (THPRD)

Apply by May 31, 2022.

THPRD is committed to welcoming and including employees of all backgrounds and identities, and we are proud to offer opportunities that explore a variety of career possibilities within the field of parks and recreation. As part of our commitment to the community and based on park and recreation’s historic underrepresentation of communities of color, this internship program is intended for students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Color.

The Community Garden Intern will support the district’s community garden program. THPRD coordinates over four hundred plots throughout its service area; these sites are essential to the greater Beaverton area as they allow our patrons to grow food together and create a sense of community and belonging. The intern will assist to build the program’s future, ensure its sustainability, and work in partnership with the community.

This internship is budgeted for 20-25 hours (20-25 hours per week for 12 weeks with the possibility of an extension for fall term). The district will work with interns to develop a schedule that works around their current class schedule. While any meetings with THPRD staff will need to be scheduled within the hours of Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., other tasks (such as site visits, data collection, internet research, etc.) may be completed during weekends and evening hours depending on transportation and equipment needs.

Candidates must be enrolled, have been enrolled in the past year, or plan to enroll in the next year in a college-level class, certificate, or degree program. Previous experience in the focus area is desired, but not required. Successful candidates will have a basic understanding of software and computer operations, written and verbal communication, basic math, and an interest in parks, trails, and recreation.

We got our start in May of 2021 doing virtual conventions and have been lucky enough to host people such as Danielle Rose Russell, Amelia Eve, Kaylee Bryant, Olivia Scott Welch, Kiana Madeira, Ben Levin, Crystal Reed, and more. While we’ve done exclusively virtual events the past year, we are currently gearing up for hybrid events (in person with virtual options).

Who we are: We are a small business, founded by, run by, and staffed by, queer women.

Who we’re looking for: We’re looking for 1-2 interns who are excited about our values, self-starters, have excellent customer service skills, and can manage confidential information. This position is ideal for someone who likes events and wants experience in event administration, communications/social media management, marketing, and/or contract writing.

What we need: We have a great staff, but most are day-of event coordinators and we are looking for more people to round out our back-of-house team! Of course, day-of coordination is still necessary and we always need more handlers for our guests. In addition to day-of coordination, interns would aid in email management, social media inbox management, organizing and shipping out autographs, coordinating celebrity guest needs, working with hotel and event staff and volunteers, and other duties as assigned.

Hours: 10-15 hours per week, choose your own schedule. Our team is located all over the world and has varying office hours!

Location: Remote. Ideally, Portland-based and would be willing to do some work with one of our Directors, Hanna, who is PDX based though it is not required.

Compensation: This is an unpaid position with the possibility of moving into a permanent/paid role eventually. Coordination with a university for internship credit is an option. We will offer a 20% discount to all staff members should they want to purchase any of our tickets.

Other Programs and Opportunities

Campus Rec is offering a free Lifeguard Training Program for current and incoming PSU students who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The Lifeguard Training Program is designed to reduce barriers of participation by eliminating the cost of an American Red Cross lifeguard certification course ($300 value) for students who intend to work as a lifeguard for PSU Campus Rec after completing the training.

No experience required! Trained instructors will assess your swimming abilities and create a training plan as needed. Students can choose between different training sessions, which include seven hours of remote learning and 19 hours and 45 minutes of in-person training. Through this accessible training program, we hope to rebuild our lifeguard community with a new and diverse team, and help bring an end to the national lifeguard shortage.

The Equi Institute is seeking undergraduate and graduate interns to assist with planning and implementing a statewide needs assessment of the health and wellbeing of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trangender, Asexual, Intersex and 2 Spirit (LGBTQAI2S+) Oregonians. Our mission with this project is to create a database of information cataloguing the lived experiences of LGBTQAI2S+ Oregonians which will guide and inform local and state agencies as they create and implement equitable and appropriate policy and services for our community. Of the utmost importance, we want this survey to represent the diversity and needs of the most marginalized of the queer and trans community including BIPOC, unhoused folks, disabled folks, immigrants and refugees, folks in rural areas, and folks battling other intersecting axes of oppression.

These internships have the possibility to be tailored to students’ specific skills and interests. There are three different internship teams we are building: (1) Public Health Team with different tracks including Biostatistics, Health Promotion, Community Health, Health Systems Management and Policy, and Public Health Practice; (2) Communications Team with different tracks including Graphic Design, Communications, and Social Media Marketing, and; (3) Community Outreach and Coalition Building Team

These internships will be supervised by Julia Przedworski, PhD (they/them) and Beck Wright, MPH (they/them). Julia holds a PhD in Health Services Research, Policy and Administration from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Julia’s work focuses on advancing health equity for marginalized populations, with a particular focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) populations. Beck is the Evaluation Lead and Senior Consultant at Rede Group. Beck specializes in data analysis, evaluation, research, and policy analysis and development. As a health equity and social justice subject matter expert, they have served as co-chair of the national LGBT HealthLink Steering Committee and as a member of the Community Advisory Board for the national Advancing Science & Practice in the Retail Environment (ASPIRE) grant. Beck has nearly 20 years of public health experience, with an emphasis on equity, tobacco, and chronic disease prevention. I would additionally serve as a liason/point person when Julia and Beck are available for day to day questions.

Equi Institute is in the pre-research phase currently and we would not have work available for them until early 2022. Contact annas@equi-institute.org  with interest or questions.

Buy Nothing and Sustainability 101 Course Page

The Planning and Sustainability Office is very excited to announce a new Canvas course page . You can find the link by clicking the title or picture above.

The course contains links to resources on how and where to compost both on and off campus, what can be recycled, interesting videos about fast-fashion, links to where to get more sustainable affordable products in Portland, and so much more. Maybe the best part?! We now have a discussion available in the course so you can ask for and offer up items to the PSU Community! We hope that the page will function like a "Buy Nothing"/free Craigslist/Facebook marketplace/Buy-Sell-Trade-Free service for the company, but we put the discussion right in Canvas to keep the platform familiar and restricted to the PSU community.

We welcome feedback on all the course content. We encourage you to use the Buy Nothing discussion as you start cleaning out your dorm or office as the term wraps-up! See you on Canvas.
