All term, we have focused on developing ideas and drawing inspiration from many different sources. However, the majority of the prompts have been focused around writing or note taking rather than creating art pieces. So for this prompt, take a break from writing and go back to the basics. Using at least 5 of the elements of design (form, shape, line, texture, color, space and movement), students should create artwork that contains absolutely no words. The goal of this prompt is to use the ways in which this class has taught us to find inspiration and have fun creating art. This prompt also aims to expand the students' knowledge in design since these seven elements are used to create elevated, well rounded artworks and have been utilized in some of the best pieces in history.
Instructions:
Create a write up of your design:
Explain how each of the five (or more) elements of design will be used in your artwork. It’s important to note that some elements can be discreetly utilized in artworks. For example, using implied lines rather than physical lines.
First draft:
Complete a rough sketch of your artwork that illustrates the basic design. This should not be perfect and may leave room for small adjustments and tweaks to the design later. However, this sketch should convey the basic format of your design and reflect how each element of design will be utilized in the final artwork.
Finish the artwork!
Quick Bio = Hello! My name is Sierrah Kelly, I go by she/her pronouns, and I can catch 17 pieces of popcorn in my mouth in a row.
Our story begins at my high school art class in the early spring of 2020. Since it was my senior year and I had a little extra time between my classes to pick up a new art project. My art teacher at the time recommended that I help him redecorate the walls of the art room. He had been planning to redecorate the room for quite some time but had never really narrowed down what to do with the front facing wall. It was a bland gray color with peeling paint and desperately needed to be spruced up. So me, him and a couple of other students from class worked to come up with an idea. After a couple of days we finally landed on the idea to demonstrate the seven elements of design through a mural on the wall. Our idea was to create seven individual circles and line them up from one side of the front facing wall to the other. Each of the circles would represent a different element and would be designed by one of the art students. I ended up designing the circle dedicated to form. My idea was to make the circle into a realistic marble with lots of shading and depth to make it pop out.
However, this story ends tragically. When I was about half way through the painting, the high school had to shut down because of the coronavirus outbreak. It sucked that I had put so much time and effort into something that I wouldn’t get to finish. But at least we got to graduate early! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
