The beauty of clothing is that we get to adorn our bodies with embellishments however we see fit. Each article of clothing or piece of jewelry we wear was designed by a creative somewhere. These people help us by creating these specific art pieces we can incorporate into everyday life. My creative goal for 2020 was to create a wide variety of custom art pieces that you can wear. It is an amazing way to reflect on my own identity and what I want to show to the world! It also gave me an opportunity to present my friends with unique gifts tailored to their own style. Overall this is just a great way to tell the world to be creative and fun!
Now you may be wondering, what's the prompt? I want you to create your very own custom piece!
Start by brainstorming what you would want to create.
I like to start by thinking about my favorite things or images that inspire me.
Also determining if you have a preset idea for a particular image (meaning do you already know what you'd want to put it on)
Once you figure out what you would want the image to be, it's time to start thinking about materials.
I like to start by determining what I would want the scale to be (what type of clothing would it be on)
The other important aspect is what I have on hand and what I need to get. (I prefer to use secondhand or vintage pieces that would otherwise be in a landfill)
Start creating!
This should be whatever you want it to be! Have fun with it!
The only constraint is that it has to be wearable! It doesn't have to be something you would want to wear all the time, however.
Document your work!! Have fun with this too! See what creative way you could capture your art!
Emily's Quick Bio = Hi my name is Emily McMurchie and I am an Aquarius!
Bringing joy to people makes me extremely happy. I love being able to give meaningful gifts that will bring a smile to people's faces. I also love self expression, it is something I value very highly. So in 2020 I started making art you can wear on your body. I started this collection of hand painted jean jackets for my friends. I got all my jackets from vintage or second hand stores so I could ensure that I was doing my part to contribute to sustainable fashion. Being environmentally friendly is very important! Anyways I would get this idea for a piece and it would stick with me until I made it. This resulted in an entire kick of creating handmade pieces that myself or others could wear! This expanded way past just jackets and into things like jewelry and sweaters and so on! It gave me a creative outlet that also allowed me to reflect on how I presented my own identity to the world. I made a lot of pieces that are just fun, not entirely a reflection of my own identity. I think however they are a reflection of myself. Telling the world to be bright and creative!
