Cosmetology is a Career and Technical Education program housed in the Dr. Kirk Lewis Career and Technical High School Human Services Academy. During Cosmetology’s Freshman year, the student professional will begin to accumulate credit hours via the TDLR Module system. Every day and assignment is critical as the goal is to complete all 148 task cards by the end of December of their Senior year. At that time, the student will be fully prepared to take the computerized & timed 110-question written exam. Once passed and 1,000 credit hours are reached, the practical exam is taken. The final program goal is to achieve licensure as a Cosmetology Operator before graduation.
There is a TDLR fee at each step of obtaining the License. A one-time 25 fee for a Cosmetology Student Permit during 9th grade will allow the student to practice Cosmetology during the 4 years of the program. It costs each student $55 to take the written exam at 900 hours, $76 for the practical exam at 1,000 hours, and $50 to receive the license in the mail upon graduation and test completion. Fees are non-refundable or transferable and are paid directly to TDLR via their online system. The district’s CTE department may offer scholarships to cover the testing expenses for those that qualify and meet the set deadlines. Prices are subject to change per TDLR.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation governs our Cosmetology Program.
PISD, CTE, CTHS and our Cosmetology program abide by all TDLR laws, rules & regulations.
