Biocodicological analyses of parchment manuscripts

This workshop will present various methods developed and used during the B2C project. Special  emphasis will be placed on visual analyzes of parchment, including identification of animal species,  observation of animal anatomy and tools marks from parchment production.

Note: for the purposes of this workshop a wider range of parchment manuscripts (not just Carolingian) will be selected so  that all types of parchment are represented.

Session 2

Alberto Campagnolo

Probing the Past: Techniques for Recording Medieval Bookbindings

This workshop focuses on advanced methods for documenting the structural features of medieval  bookbindings, particularly the Carolingian and Romanesque bindings from the Orléans collection.  Participants will learn how to use probes, digital tools, and photogrammetry to record and analyse  bookbinding structures. We will demonstrate practical techniques for capturing details of board attachments,  sewing structures, and other binding elements. This hands-on session aims to equip researchers and  conservators with the skills needed to document and interpret the complex physical characteristics of  historical bookbindings, providing new insights into their construction and historical context.
