If many medieval manuscripts still remain today, it is in part due to the exceptional durability of the parchment from which they were made. This material, essential to the medieval world, has however only rarely been studied in itself, often neglected in favor of the text that it holds. This workshop aims therefore to highlight the role of parchment in medieval societies through the production line of a manuscript, from the livestock to the bound book. The guest speakers will explore all aspects of parchment production and use through the lens of their diverse disciplines, ranging from economic history to (zoo)archaeology through molecular biology and codicology. This interdisciplinary approach will contribute to an all-round understanding of this often underrated animal material.
