Workshop 3 & 4 - London 2022
Venue
Workshops 3 and 4 were hosted by the British Museum from Tuesday 20 to Thursday 22 September 2022
Workshop 3 and 4
Workshop 3 centred around scientific methods in analytical chemistry, workshop 4 covered artefact analysis and curation. Unfortunately due to an unexpected historic UK event, the first day of the workshop (Monday 19 September) had to be cancelled and the workshop programme was condensed. This meant the planned visits to scientific laboratories at the Crick Institute and talks on Equality and Diversity in Science were unable to take place.
Online presentations
The first morning of the workshop saw the ChemArch ESRs give a 10-minute presentation on their research projects to date, the presentations were streamed live via Microsoft Teams allowing the wider network to participate, with around 13 project partners and supervisors hearing about the latest project developments.
ESR10: Oya Inanli
ESR14: Ingrid Bertin
ESR3: Anna White
ESR8: Margherita Cantelli
Scientific talks
On day 2 of the workshop the ESRs received talks on subjects such as:
High performance mass spectrometry
Lipid analysis and lipidomics
Cyclic IMS
FT-ICR mass spectrometry
There were also 3 career talks speakers at LabCorp and The Crick Institute
British Museum Artefact Science
On days 3 and 4 of the workshop, the ESRs:
Took part in group work on how science is used to present a specific artefact from the museum collection
Recevied talks from museum curators and scientists on how scientific research has been used to improve understanding of particular museum collections
Received a talk from museum experts on the presentation of archaeological remains along with the highlighting of new technologies which have removed the need for destructive sampling in some instances
Archaeological visit
The final day of the workshop had the ChemArch fellows travelling to Stonehenge, Wiltshire (an historic monument) for a sunrise visit which took place on the autumn equinox. After the sunrise visit the group received a talk from English Heritage colleagues about managing the historic site.

Outreach planning
Following the talk on Stonehenge, the ChemArch ESRs took part in two outreach planning sessions with project partner Jacqui Mulville from Guerilla Archaeology.
The outreach will involve the ESRs attending a music festival in the summer of 2023 to bring archaeological science to the public, more details to follow.
