Welcome to Your Career Development Programme for Year 11!
This year you will be working through The Year 11 Career Workbook which is designed to help you start thinking about some BIG QUESTIONS as well as learn RESEARCH SKILLS that you are going to need as you prepare to look at options for study after you've finished at Island School and in your future career.
Ever heard of people getting a "lucky break"?
Very often that luck is about the preparation put in beforehand + recognising an opportunity when it arises.
That is, when someone has put in preparation such as building skills, getting useful qualifications, and undertaking work or volunteer experience then they are ready to recognise and seize opportunities when they arise!
In your workbook you will find references to this page. These are indicated by a sign in your workbook. We encourage you to share your careers research with your parents, your tutor and the Higher Education Team and your parents. (In fact, we've attached a fantastic Canadian based resource for parents to this page just for your parents!)
Take the time to have discussions about what you've learned. These conversations will often give you valuable insights into further matters you can research and consider towards potential career development, subjects you might take as part of your higher education studies and even more importantly what you would like to study in Years 12 and 13.
Finally, you should notice that each Part of this page has a corresponding section in your workbook so it should be really easy to see what resources are available to support you.
From the about the middle of Term 1 we will be running Year 11 interviews at the Higher Education Office. This is a good chance to discuss your progress in working through this workbook and your careers information on Family Connection.
Make the time to get to university and college visits, go to open days and campus tours.
These are really important! It's a good way of digging deeper in your research.
Many universities visit our school and also run outside events. You can find about these in the weekly VISION newsletter. We expect you to attend at least 5 visits in terms 1 and 2 of years 11 and as many as you can in years 12 and in term 1 of Year 13. Challenge yourself to find out about at least one university or college you have never considered. You might be surprised at the ideas for further research that spring from the opportunity to hear about somewhere different!
Information days at institutions and campus visits are good ways of getting a clear idea of where each university is located and seeing what the campus looks like. Keep a record!
Over the course of terms 1 and 2 the Higher Education Team, your tutors and Head of House will be raising your awareness of things you need to do now to achieve here at Island School but also to raise awareness of what you need to do to be able to move successfully from Island School towards your further or higher education pathway. Your next step is to consider:
Your subject choices for Years 12 and 13
Planning opportunities to “expand your horizons” through carefully considered CAS choices, work experience, continuing your career development research …
Considering what you need to do and when to make sure that you are ready to make your applications in Year 13
We think it’s important to be able to have short and long term goals as it helps us to organize and focus our efforts. The final step is to set yourself some career goals. To make this easier we have given you examples on the website and attached a document template for you to use. Remember, you can change your goals. – In fact it’s good practice to reconsider them from time to time and think about whether, from all you’ve learnt and from all your research, you want to change your goals a little or even a lot!
