The following policy was developed and approved with regard to declaring misconduct and disciplinary action:
As matter of policy the school will generally take off record any censuring or disciplinary action taken against a student where the misdemeanour or behavioural concern occurred before year 12 and 13.
Students will be advised that actions resulting in censure or disciplinary action during their senior years at Island School could impact on references given by the school.
In any case where this situation arises the matter will be referred to the Senior Head of House, Principal and Head of Careers for consideration and decision regarding the student's reference. Island School has a clear preference to err on the side of allowing students the benefit of the doubt in terms of having shown an ability to mature and progress beyond the originating incident but without compromising the integrity of the school.*
Where a censure or disciplinary action is going to be disclosed a student should be advised. This is to allow the student an opportunity to take this into account in the number of applications submitted and their ability to address the issue in their application.
*An exception is where students have been convicted of a criminal offence in Hong Kong whether or not related to an incident in school as this disclosure is required on some reference forms.
