This Higher Education Calendar will never be a complete "road map" - why? because all of us are individuals and this calendar gives you some "road signs" which can help you plan ahead. But, just like when you are driving, you need to watch the road! Using this analogy of 'watching the road' - this part is the workshops run by the HE department, your HE meetings, TFL etc. These work together with this calendar to help you enjoy your journey to your Higher Education destination.
The Calendar contains recommendations to guide you and prompt you to act. These are guidelines for you and your parents. You will recognise whether they are applicable to you (not everything will be). We also have a great selection of print resources available in the Higher Education Office. - You can see the list of texts on the library page. You can also find out more about visits in the Vision and check out the TV screen outside the HE office.
These are great years to start exploring your interests and to discover more about the careers people have. It’s never too early to start asking questions about what people do, what they like about their jobs – you never know it might get you thinking about what you enjoy in your studies and what you might want to go on to do once you leave school (even though that seems so far away at this point)!
If you are in a country where you might want to do your higher education studies, take the time to look at a campus or two.
Year 8's: In term 3 you will be exploring careers in your tutor time and talking about SKILLS! You can also think about your OPTIONS choices for ELEMENTS in Year 9. Can you use them to “Try something new” OR “Expand your horizons” OR “Deepen your knowledge” OR “Develop a skill”?
This year you get to think about your ELEMENTS courses. Both of these are important as they set a foundation for you before you choose subjects for years 12 and 13. They also give you a chance to explore subjects that are entirely new!
August onwards
This year you will be starting your GCSE and IGCSE courses as well as some useful studies in ICT and PE. Your commitment to these is really important as your grades from Year 10 onwards will be included on your transcript for university applications and in providing your final transcript issued by Island School.
Familiarise yourself with the resources on the Higher Education Website – visit the site often as we update it to keep you up to date!
