WORDS FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear OLM Family,

Throughout Arts’ week, OLM was transformed into a living gallery. Arts’ Week allowed our students to explore their creative boundaries, from intricate visual arts displays to live performance pieces. The Auditorium has never looked better, being filled with excellent artwork and ceramics. I chose many of the students’ work to make my office a living gallery of OLM’s talents. Thank you very much to the parents who made a point of speaking to me at the International Festival, saying how amazing the artwork on display was this year. The addition of a kiln to our School has made a huge and positive difference to our students’ experience of the arts. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the exceptional work of the arts’ department, led by Ms.Thaís Silvestre, for their outstanding contributions in making this year’s Arts’ Week the best we have ever had. 

Arts’ Week culminated in the return of Schoolstock, our celebration of contemporary music. This year was particularly special, as we welcomed talented bands not only from our own staff and student body but from neighboring schools: Eleva, British, and EARJ. Special thanks go to Lucas Machado, our Middle and High School Music teacher, for making this event possible, and such a great success, and to our own student and teacher bands for producing music of such consistently high quality. The future of music at OLM is in very good hands. 

Events like these don't happen by accident. They are the result of months of planning by our dedicated staff, the rehearsals and enthusiasm of our students, and the hard work of our maintenance team in preparing the court, and in erecting and dismantling the stage for each event. Neither the International Festival nor Arts’ Week would have been possible without them in supporting our events’ team, Marcia, Filipe, and Goreth, every step of the way. Thank you all for being part of this remarkable journey.

Lastly, and in case you missed it on our Instagram, I would like to congratulate our 11th Grade student, Valentina Almeida, for her commitment to service, and who received this message from Dereck Rhodes, the head of the organization, AMISA, American International Schools in the Americas, of which OLM is a member:

The AMISA Global Citizen Grant and Recognition Program celebrates students who are making exemplary contributions through service-learning that deepens understanding of social issues and creates positive change locally and globally. Your work stood out to the selection committee, and we are proud to recognize your efforts.

This is an outstanding achievement, resulting from Valentina's commitment to finding homes for stray and abandoned dogs and cats in Rio de Janeiro. As a stray dog and cat owner myself, I can only say how proud I am of Valentina’s efforts in embodying our core values of empathy, equity, and excellence.

Prezada Família OLM,

Durante toda a Semana das Artes, a OLM se transformou em uma galeria viva. A Semana das Artes permitiu que nossos alunos explorassem seus limites criativos, desde exposições complexas de arte visual até apresentações ao vivo. O auditório nunca esteve tão bonito, repleto de excelentes obras de arte e de cerâmica. Escolhi muitos dos trabalhos dos alunos para transformar minha sala em uma galeria viva dos talentos da OLM. Muito obrigado aos pais que fizeram questão de falar comigo no Festival Internacional, comentando que as obras de arte em exposição estavam incríveis este ano. A aquisição de um forno para nossa Escola fez uma enorme e positiva diferença na experiência artística dos alunos. Gostaria de expressar minha sincera gratidão pelo trabalho excepcional do departamento de artes, liderado por  Ms.Thaís Silvestre, e por suas excelentes contribuições para tornar a Semana das Artes deste ano a melhor que já tivemos. 

A Semana das Artes culminou com o retorno do Schoolstock, nossa celebração da música contemporânea. Este ano foi particularmente especial. Recebemos bandas talentosas não apenas de nosso próprio corpo docente e discente, mas também de escolas vizinhas: Eleva, British e EARJ. Agradecimentos especiais ao  Mr. Lucas Machado, nosso professor de Música do Middle e High School, por tornar este evento possível e por seu grande sucesso, e às nossas bandas de alunos e professores por produzirem música de constante alta qualidade. O futuro da música na OLM está em muito boas mãos. 

Eventos como esses não acontecem por acaso. São o resultado de meses de planejamento por parte de nossa dedicada equipe, dos ensaios e do entusiasmo dos  alunos e do trabalho árduo da nossa equipe de manutenção na preparação da quadra e na montagem e desmontagem do palco para cada evento. Nem o Festival Internacional, nem a Semana das Artes teriam sido possíveis sem o apoio dado à nossa equipe de eventos — Marcia, Filipe e Goreth — em cada etapa do caminho. Obrigado a todos por fazerem parte desta jornada extraordinária.

Esta é uma conquista notável, resultado do compromisso de Valentina em buscar lares para cães e gatos de rua abandonados no Rio de Janeiro. Como dono de um cachorro e um gato de rua, só posso dizer o quanto estou orgulhoso dos esforços de Valentina  na personificação dos nossos valores de empatia, equidade e excelência.
