Purpose of Instructional Guides
Ogden School District's instructional guides are standards-based guides driven by the Utah Core Standards, using materials adopted by Ogden's Board of Education.
Instructional guides are collaboratively developed and refined by the Student Achievement Team, teachers, instructional coaches and administrators.
Instructional Guides are a tool for:
ALIGNMENT: Provides support and coordination between concepts, skills, standards, curriculum and assessments.
COMMUNICATION: Articulates expectations and learning goals for students.
PLANNING: Focuses instructional decisions and targets critical information for instructional tasks.
COLLABORATION: Promotes professionalism and fosters dialigue between colleagues about best practices pertaining to sequencing, emphasis, length, integration and reteaching strategies.
How to Use This Instructional Guide
Year-at-a-Glance: The year-at-a-glance is a quick reference guide for the units in each grade to assist in big-picture mapping; navigate to a specific unit for more detailed information.
Pacing: Each unit has a suggested length in weeks to guide pacing. Although teachers are encouraged to follow this pacing, plus or minus a week, prioritize student need over pacing expectations.
Unit Overview: Each unit has the following.
A topic, essential question, and performance mode as the focus
Focus standards for reading and writing
Academic vocabulary to be addressed throughout
Launch text to be used as a model for the writing task
Curriculum-connected supplementary resources: Newsela lessons and text sets, Listenwise podcast episodes, and novel study suggestions (navigate to the ELA Supplemental Book List for more information and resources)
Writing Task: This is the Whole Class Learning extended/process writing task. For backwards design purposes, this is provided before the Whole Class Anchor Texts.
Anchor Texts: This page provides the suggested Whole Class Learning texts (aka anchor texts), along with a breakdown of the learning tasks for each. Supplementary texts are noted at the bottom.
Small Group Texts: This page provides the suggested Small Group Learning texts, along with a breakdown of the learning tasks for each. Supplementary texts and the Collaborative Performance Task are noted at the bottom.
Independent Texts: This page provides resources for the Independent Learning texts, along with the prompt and resources for the On-Demand/Timed writing task.
🔍 Focus Standard: This is a standard that is essential to this unit and should be a focus in instruction.
⏳ Teacher Discretion: This is a learning task that could be condensed or skipped altogether depending on pacing and student need.
