Secondary Literacy Assessments
Decision Tree
Evidence-based reading assessments are the first step to supporting readers in the secondary classroom.
Use this decision tree to determine which assessments to administer and "next steps" in terms of instruction and/or further diagnostics.
WHERE DO I FIND THE ASSESSMENTS?
Oral Reading Fluency Assessment
You can use DIBELS grade 8 passages along with the end of year grade 8 benchmarks, or the passages in CORE Assessing Reading Multiple Measures book (NOTE: When we use DIBELS beyond grade 8 we are no longer using it as a screener. Instead we are using it to gather baseline data and plan next steps for instruction)
MAZE
You can use the MAZE comprehension assessments found in the CORE Assessing Reading Multiple Measures book
Phonics
If students are not meeting benchmark for end of year grade 8 in accuracy, conduct a CORE phonics assessment. This can be found in CORE Assessing Reading: Multiple Measures book (each secondary site has received one).
Phonological and Phonemic Awareness
If students experience difficulty with the phonics assessment, administer a phonemic awareness assessment, such as the one found in Heggerty's Bridge the Gap or the PAD assessment. In addition, consult with the school's Speech-Language Pathologist.
