DIBELS
Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills
Assessment Materials & Instructional Handouts
What is DIBELS?
DIBELS ® (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) 8th Edition:
It is a universal screener - used on all students in the class 3 times per year as an indicator of reading proficiency
Quick to administer (60 seconds per assessment)
Provides reliable and accurate measures that are indicators of student reading performance
Research at the University of Oregon is ongoing ensuring the reliability, validity and sensitivity to student change
It is a curriculum based measure (CBM).
It will not provide a report card grade - it is to be used to help with planning instruction
DIBELS is designed to be used by the classroom educator from K to Grade 8. Think of it as taking the temperature of your class.
The role of the DIBELS universal screener is to:
Identify who we need to know more about
catch those students that might otherwise fall through the cracks
identify trends and areas of strengths and weaknesses for the entire class
You will need to conduct further diagnostic assessments to:
determine what the specific issues are
plan instructional goals
monitor student progress over time
Note: Diagnostic assessments were shared during the September 7th PD K-3 Literacy Google Classroom and are listed under classwork.
